Nvidia cheating again, this time Crysis

It is cheating, they are rendering the game incorrectly to boost performance, thats got nothing to do with driver optimisation, its cheating. :p
Hey Loadsa,

just to entertain another viewpoint:

Crysis is a new game, so new its not even released yet, don't you think there could be the chance nVidia are still getting some bugs and glitches sorted?

You should try running the Crysis demo using an Radeon HD 2900XT! some of the textures shimmer, details vanish and re-appear before you eyes (like posts on fences etc), there is still lots of work to be done.

the GT is still whooping the 2900 XT,
I think your exaggerating, the 8800GT is the better card but not by that much. I've got both here at the moment and have been testing/benching them both and the 8800GT certainly isn't 'whooping' the HD 2900XT, unless you consider a 1-8fps advantage so! :p

The deal clincher for the 8800GT over the HD2900XT is its cheaper, quieter, uses less power and runs a 'little' faster then the Radeon.

It's not cheating, jesus christ - talk about jumping to conclusions.

It's simply a undesirable bug caused by a side effect to changing the driver to work better with a certain game engine.

Just like the shiny grass and **** coloured water in the source engine back with the 6800 range. Being as drivers use profiles based on executable names in memory, then obviously renaming the executable won't cause the driver tweaks to kick in.

BTW, BOTH ATI and Nvidia have done this in the past, so dont look at ATI through rose coloured glasses.

They are both as bad as one another at this game.

This occurred to me too, and I agree. Simply because there's a graphical error doesn't mean they are cheating. The GT is new, the demo is new, the drivers are beta. The fact that renaming the exe loses framerate means nothing in itself, because of course there are crysis specific optimizations in the driver, and renaming the exe would disable them. It's such an obvious thing too, someone was bound to spot it. Just looks like a bug.

This is not cheating, it is just how graphics card companies work their drivers for a balance between image quality and speed. ALL graphics card companies have ALWAYS done it.

Yeah they are BETA drivers for a reason....lmao.

The demo isn't even an indicator of how the end game will run.

ANyone complaining about this type of optimisation only has themselves to blame because when they run 3dmark do they put the gfx sliders to "performance" mode to get higher marks? yes they do....lol

Some here will tell you thats the proper way to do it (1 even shot his mouth off about it for 1 week), I just leave it as installed defaults which is Quality on Nvidia, but game in High Quality.

think the reason they did this was there is not a card that exists yet that can handle this demo

not great publicity if you spend £200+ and it is a slideshow at high settings

NV have probably been sitting around playing BF2/CS:S all year at work since they found out ATI had nothing to compete with them at the top end.
Surely can't be a coincidence that NV decide not to release a high end product the very same year ATI fail to. ;)

It's only a beta driver & a game demo, still technically cheating, but not much of a problem until both a final driver and the game is out.

^^That is a very strong counter argument, well made point.

I'm struggling to understand why people are saying this is an "undesirable" bug etc. How could it be a bug that is fixed when you change the name of the executable? yeah right....

Nvidia has obviously put something into their drivers that pick up the game and do something specific for it. Is this cheating? Maybe - at best it shows they are unable to do things "right"; I dont think putting in optimisations for benchmark / review games a good thing to do. At worst, they've been busted cheating... again. Yes both camps have done it, but the computing industry has a short memory - so Nvidia are the only cheats at the moment.

I think we should wait for the review sites to look into this a bit more - they have all the apps to work out whether its a fudge optimisation for one game, or a cut corners cheat.

Cant say i am surprised at Nvidia using driver cheats / optimizations to increase their frames in Crysis. Especially with their new cards out they probably thought no one would notice, as the cards are really good normally, but they still wanted that little bit extra for a game thats going to be as big as Crysis & likely sell many cards. Just goes to show really, anything to get more sales, unfortunately at the expense of their customers who generally expect better :(

Yeah they are, but why do the final 169.02 WHQL drivers do the same (according to those).

They will fix it, theres another set of drivers coming this week that will miraculously render the game correctly, you can be sure of that now that they've been rumbled, and how can you say its not cheats when its only the 169.xx drivers that do it, any drivers before the 169's all render the game correctly, so its no driver bug, and no, its because the games new etc..., its obvious they've added the cheats in to these drivers to boost the peformance, otherwise they would have been in every driver set before the 169's as well.
