WHAT is a lot?????

Can someone tell me WHY loads of people insist on using the word a lot when there is no word a lot???

Do they? Do they really insist on using it? I doubt it, they just probably don't care as much as you do about having a space in between the two words. "a lot" is technically wrong, but wow, it's not exactly a literature-tragedy is it?

What does "a lot"mean?

You know very well it means "A lot". If you couldn't work that out, you're dumber than the people who use "a lot" in the first place. ;)

IF thee an me were to take a IQ test then reckon I would be the not so dumb one.
For your info I DO know what they mean even tho they choose to write it as a lot!!!!.
I've been around the world and some so thee can stick that in thy pipe and suck on it.
THAT was never the issue to start with.
There is a word that comes to mind but thee aint worth gettin banned from the forums for.

You just managed to butcher the English language there so I don't see why you're getting all righteous in your first post.

I imagine at least half of the spelling/grammar mistakes made on any forum are down to people just not reading what they have typed. Also, words and phrases like then/than a lot/a lot can look the same when quickly scanning text.

As long as you can understand what is being said I see no reason to complain and create a thread about it.

I think verbal screw-ups are far worse. :p

"Are you stupid or something?"

"Not nessa-celery"

No don't mention them :o

I've always had pretty flawless spelling and grammar since I was a youngster but when it comes to speaking, it seems a sentence can rarely get from my neurons to my mouth without being wrecked in some tragic way.

As long as you can understand what it is they are trying to say, who cares?

This is a forum, not a spelling exam.

Damn right,

stop worrying, what a pittyful life you must have if that winds you up, ignore it, it isnt going to change is it?!

People are always going to type, talk, walk, break wind, the way they want to, who are we to tell them to do different, people will do what ever people want to do and we cant stop that.

Lighten up and relax dude, dont give yourself an heart attack over such a simple matter.

This "a lot", "awhile" business must have started recently because I don't remember it being used much before and now every 'ker does it.

Language changes, would you rather we all spoke in Shakespearian or just grunts suit you lot?

Language may change, and I accept that, but the following 2 facts remain:

"I have gone to the shops" makes sense.

"I of gone to the shops" doesn't.

Oooohhhhhh it's the "getting rightseous"now is it?
Last time I heard that used was way back in 1968 when I was a biker.
For your info I mangle the"queens"English on porpoise.......I mean poipose eeerrrrr purpose.
I like to butcher the English on purpose..........
same as when I go into a pub where nobody knows me...........I mix Spanish and German together(spoken with a Southern drawl) just to confuse them.

true, but "I would have gone to the shops..." √ Sounds wrong and doesn't roll off the tongue. where as "I would have gone to the shops..." x Sounds better and less jarring.
