WHAT is a lot?????

I have a very dim view of people who cannot be bothered to learn to use the English language properly - it says a lot about their character. Hence, I usually ignore badly spelt posts and posters or sometimes correct then at the risk of being flamed. Mistakes can be forgiven and learnt from but ignorance and laziness is not an excuse.

Lazy? ;)

Can I think of you as a lazy person who cannot be bothered to learn to use the English language properly now?

To be quite honest, I work full time and make sure that I use grammar and punctuation in the right context in all my emails/communication - as I know that when instructing people, they will take every word literally and so it must be at least 99.99% correct. However, during my time on the forums, I will post short minimum effort posts as I don't really care how it reflects me as a person and I am fed up of constantly trying to keep up a consistent performance with my grammar. I hardly think that this constitutes the sweeping statement that "I can't be bothered to learn my native language properly", but merely can't be bothered to use it correctly 24/7!

Just my views on the matter and I am hardly part of the Grammar Nazi movement

No need for two spaces after a full-stop. See me after class.

Call me a purist; I prefer to use 2 spaces as this was how I was taught in English and wordprocessing.

/edit - I see you all picked up on the then/them. I thought it would be ironic to leave one in because I every time I post something like that, someone makes sure to pick a fault or two. I have no complaints with people who make mistakes or genuine typos in a speedy reply but the lazy ones who consistently make no effort to improve their English (or get it right in the first place) are the ones I dislike.

Getting upset because some people don't use 100% perfect grammar and spelling on an Internet forum = anal.

If you want to get upset then do so at the right people. The kids of today that are taught by poor quality teachers of English. The people today that send text messages in that awful way.

Help the youth (and not so young! :D ) of today understand and be proud of using correct spelling and grammar.

Most of all just lighten up and take a few chill pills. Whilst there is poverty and death and war in the world bad spelling is the least of all our worries...

Change rules if there's a sensible reason, sure. Don't if there isn't :)

I certainly wouldn't regard ignorance/extreme laziness as a sensible reason for changing a language's rules of grammar.

But that's how language has changed its gotten simpler out of laziness just look at the writing of Ye olde Britain it was far more complex.

Who'd have thought it eh people are lazy ******s and that drives the invention of new easier ways of doing things.

Well that and money ;)

And lacked many of the rules and standards that modern English has. There was no standardised spelling, for example.

Why in the world do so many people persist in writing 'women' instead of 'woman'?

It drives me up the wall. You wouldn't confuse 'man' with 'men'. It's the exact same flipping rule.

(Well, I know why it is; it's to do with pronunciation. The level of ignorance in spelling such a simple word wrongly is just maddening.)

Same thing with 'should/would/could/must have'; it's like saying 'I of just been running' instead of 'I have just been running'. It makes no sense

I find it disturbing that people would write "then" in place of "than" without thinking there's anything wrong with it.

I'm staggered by just how many regular typos people will make.
The worst is a regular occurance in Consoles. "I just brought a PS3", very, very annoying.

musicman53 now fails big time, he's attitude is getting the better of him and obviously hasn't heard of sentences.

Agreed, although I agreed with him on his initial point, he has lost all credibility with me due to his attitude in his posts.

Its a shame really.

..."I just brought a PS3", very, very annoying.

Oooh that infuriates me too (the brought part, not necessarily the PS3 part).

It costs nothing to exercise the proper use of English though.

While that may be true, one doesnt always bother to pay attention to spelling on something such as a forum, again, it is not a spelling exam/contest.

As long as you can understand the person who has typed something out, then it should not matter at all.

Those who nitpick on such things need to get a life imo.

Some people are rubbish at English, but can be very good at other things.
Just because your good at English, does that mean your as good as someone else in a diffrent area?
Everyone has diffrent gifts.

Communicating properly isn't the same as "being good at English" though. People who are good at English know about William Shakespeare and poetry analysis. People who can communicate properly spell correctly and use the correct words and correct grammar.

As long as you can understand what it is they are trying to say, who cares?

Tut. See, now that's just ignorance towards a very obvious problem which, believe it or not, actually is a problem.

Why ignore it now and wait until it's a bigger problem, when Grammar Nazi's can get to work now and keep things nice and average?

Just like those annoying Government adverts - Think.

"Can you borrow me some money?"

"In pacific..."

"I would have..."

"I have nothing to loose."

"There not listening."

"Resting on there laurels."

"lol i no lol"

Shame!! Ruins my enjoyment of an otherwise very good forum. I've tried to ignore it and keep my petty nature in check, but I can't help but be supremely irked.

That's just it though; often it makes it more difficult to understand what someone's saying. I've often had to re-read a sentence a couple of times to understand what it means just because I've got half way through and realised it makes no sense.
