Ok, due to a previous thread, I was thinking about this and wondered what peoples views were. Do you class talking in WoW or using MSN, IRC, Ventrilo or whatever as a social thing or do think its ridiculous and socialising should happen face to face only?

I see chatting on teamspeak as a social thing. Dont see how people think that its anti-social.

I mean, my wife is more than happy to watch tv while im at work, but thinks im sad for chatting with mates over teamspeak in my free time. You're having a laugh, catching up, and annoying each other, so hows that any different to face to face?

It's a good way for me to stay in touch with friend and family in the UK. So, no it's not anti-social.

I dont watch tv anymore as there is zero interaction, i can barely be online at home without a microphone now.

It becomes a problem when people choose to interact via an online medium at the expense of the 'natural' choices. The phenomenon of basing your social life around a particular game or communcation medium is on the increase and I feel alienates the parts of human nature and our social skills that require all the interaction stimulus we use when communcating with fellow human beings (smell, touch, body language).

There's definitely nothing wrong with communication (after all we have had the Telephone for a century) but we need to use all of a communication skills not just 1.

I prefer in person, then telephone. I've been on the net since 1990, but haven't communicated via email with someone when I could just talk to them in about 10 years...

I have to disagree. I think it's anti-social because it takes you away from real "face-to-face" social interaction. This isn't the same as on-line interaction whether it's via xfire, forums or msn. Social skills are being undermined because technology allows us to avoid confronatation.

Well its not totally Anti-Social, you can talk to you're m8's on MSN and arrange meetings etc.. and other things. Hell a guy on my class me his G/F online, he lives in York, his G/F lives in nottingham, they went to egypt and he proposed to her there, he;s only 17 too, shows what MSN / Chat rooms can do.

No it shows how imature 17 year olds are (do really think that will last). The problem is people are beginning to interact via a non-personal medium rather than a personal one as a life choice. Human to Human interaction should come way ahead of any other choice everything else is just there to support that interaction, it's the only way to develop and stableise our emotional character.

Well its not that anti social as your actually speaking to people, and like mentioned tv is just mindless dribble and no interaction. Can't beat speaking face to face with people. and i just see talking on vent as though im talking on my phone just free plus it beats typing most of the time

I didn't do any more or less face to face interaction than before I used MSN etc... So tell me how this is anti social since I hardly did any face-to-face interaction in the first place.

Since 1990 ? you must have been on something like a 286 with like 12Mhz? maybe windows 3.0 as it was released in 1990? and this is the year the first commercial ISP's came online. what on earth was there to do online back then hehe

because you could be down the pub with ya mates :P

No seriously, it might not effect you as a person but more younger people are now confined to their bedrooms playing games, chatting on msn and proclaiming that everyone's their friend on face book. They are are being starved of social skills that are imperitive in adult life.

I'm 18, I'm not imature, saying 17yr olds are imature litrally says 18yr old are.

The grammar nazis are going to be attacking you.

On subject though I don't think it's anti-social, it's social imo. You could say the same for texting all the time? I text, MSN, bebo or w.e it's convenient methods of getting messages to people.

So was I, and I still am, but that was long before I had msn.
I'm not involved in stuff like face book or hyves or whatever, just msn and xfire and teamspeak.
Can't see the fun in going to the pub every day, once a few weeks to play pool or something okay but I can just aswell get beer & drink @ home or anywhere actually.
I agree my social skillz are not very good, im way too shy, but msn etc didn't cause that at all, I've been like this long before msn because I was playing age of empires and transport tycoon :p. I mean I've had a home pc since I was born and a pc on my room since I was 6, my dad built pc's back then ( and still does now ).

I don't think you can say it's anti-social, it is by dictionary definition social. However excessive use of PC based socialising may well cause a decline in, or failure to develop real world social skills, I'll give you that.
