Hi, I recently bought a router (Netgear WGR614) and its really bad. its unstable, it can't deal with many connections at a time, and my 20mb feels like 56k again.

I want to buy a new router, and I want a good one that allows me to download, play games online and webbrowse.

I know it's not virgin media that is bad, because when I put my cable in the modem, the internet is super fast.

which routers would you recommend for 20mb cable?

my budget would be 60-80 pounds.

Search this very forum for the WRT54GL. It's a fantastic router especially when combined with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware.

exactly what i've done with my virgin connection :) (just configuring tomato at the mo in fact)

My WRT54GL is bang on such a great bit of kit pitty the same cannot the said for the virgin connection :(

I've just tried to set up one of these routers with me Virgin media BB, and I cannot get the drivers to instal correctly. I get to a point where the screen just shows a coupla boxes that look like they're taken from XP internet properties window (I'm using vista btw) with no tabs, writing, info or anything. I have no idea what to do next, any ideas?

We use a WRT54GL with the Tomato firmware. It doesn't seem to handle P2P TV all that well (i.e. Sopcast) but I'm not sure if that's just how we've set it up.

Otherwise it's rock solid and handles torrents fine. We have 3 (relatively heavy) users on a 20Mb virgin connection by the way.

What about online games? with my current router I get loss/choke spikes ingame which makes css very hard and frustrating.

We've had 3 people on TF2 at the same time and our pings have all been sub 20ms (more like 10-15ms) so no problems there. Also fine gaming when torrents have their upload limited to about 10KB/s. Haven't tried it any higher.

lots of people seem to recommend this one

Linksys WRT54GL 54Mbps Open Source Wireless Cable/DSL Router

I might take that one then.

I use the netgear 614 and not had any problems VERY solid router. Great for the price too!

how many people use your router? and do they download a lot?

ours is so annoying it overloads and like now I can't post this, because its so slow again. I have to wait 5 minutes to edit this post :@

Another vote for WRT54 and Tomato - its sings along merrily with quite a few connections and includes a very useful feature for me, Wake on Lan support.

There are no drivers. Throw the setup CD back in the box (or the bin).

Setting up a router like this for a VM cable connection just involves turning the cable modem off for a minute or two, connecting the router, turning the cable modem back on and letting it establish a connection, then turning the router on.

Or HyperWRT+Thibor+15c :)

Mine has been up since I went back to VM 20MB exactly 60 days ago and has not had a single hitch.

Torrents, Games, LAN xfer, streaming etc etc, everything - it has managed them all without fail.

I have a WRT54GS v.4, I am assuming this is a completley different model to the WRT54GL is this true?

So to get this custom software to work I am going to have to buy another router?

Thanks,

Steve

The WRT54GS v4 is identical to the WRT54G v4, which is identical to the WRT54GL.
As such, it'll run any custom firmware you throw at it.

I've just upgraded to Virgin cable 20mb and am not that impressed with the performance tbh. This thread has me thinking maybe my router isn't upto the job? Never occured to me before as I would have thought a router can easy hangle 20mb?

It's a D-Link Dl-524 : http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=316

Also what's the speed of these wired? Surely more than 54mbps?
