GTX Overclock - No Artifacts, But Crashing?

Hey guys,

As some of you know I've been cramming in some overclocking on my GTX before my GT arrives, but I've hit a strange wall. I've tried my best to make it artifact or crash at 600MHz core with hours worth of looping 3D Mark 06 tests in high res and with antialiasing but it seems utterly rock solid.

The wheels fall off as soon as I even think about trying 605MHz though and I'm greeted with instant blue-screens and system crashes when I try to run 3D Mark 06 tests. Oddly it doesn't artifact whatsoever, it will just run a tiny bit of the test and then the system will reboot itself.

Just for reference my PSU is a Corsair HX 520W and both PCI-E leads are connected.

So far I've tried OCing with different apps (ATITool and Ntune, can't get Rivatuner to work for some reason and I'm not even using Vista.) I've also tried running the cooler at full pelt with no luck, can do 600MHz fine with auto-speed. I also tried running my CPU/RAM at stock while I do this so it's not that.

Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong or have I just hit the limit of my chip?

Sincerely yours,
Ulfhedjinn.

Could be the limit of the chip but most GTX's seem to manage 630,I doubt the 12v rail of your psu is dipping out but possible.

Maybe try upping the pci-e data rate in the bios, many people believe somewhere between 105-110 to be the sweetspot,I run mine at 105 and manage a stable 650 on my GTX,it may also be worth increasing northbridge voltage by a notch or two.

Aye I tried increasing the PCI-E frequency a bit but it didn't help, I'll try increasing the SB voltage like you suggested though. :)

It sounds like your PSU is not powerfull enough.

Normally you would get artifacts or a system lockup.

I had an X-Power 750w PSU which did the same thing (BSOD/shutdown) because the 12v was only running at 11.35v (Have fixed by getting ToughPower 750w.)

Now I can get it up to 640 stable.

Aye I'm getting a system lockup, sometimes a BSOD, but I find it odd this happens without any artifacts.

Can't see my PSU struggling though as it really is a beefy little thing and the rails all display the proper voltages in BIOS and programs like Speedfan. :(

I only get artifacts then crash when using ATI Tool to scan for artifacts.

If I'm gaming then I don't see anything, it just dies on me without warning.

What temps are you getting on your GPU when it dies?

My fan never got above 80% on auto which is really cr*p as it overheats.

When I forced it to 100% it took about 30mins of ATI Tool testing to get to 70*C overclocked to 640.

Hopefully keeping them temps low will help.
You may just be really unlucky and have a really bad overclocker. :(
Lets hope not eh!
