2012 Stadium design to be released today...

"The atmosphere inside this bowl, we think, will be pretty special"

Chief architect Rob Sheard

HE THINKS  I thought they did test for atmospehere to find the best design along with, letting air and sunlight in for the grass,

It was initially expected to cost £280m but the costs have since been revised.
Why do we even bother to estimate the costs for anything? If it 'was' going to be £280m but will now cost £500m, and someone obviously green-lit this increase, why was there an estimate in the first place? Clearly no matter how much it costs we'll build it anyway, they should have just sent a blank cheque with the PMs signature on it to the builders :p

Is it just me or does every official budget estimate ever published end up underestimating the costs by at least 50%?

Is the amount of money we're going to make from tourism as a result of this going to exceed the prices we're paying for these new facilities?

Wow that design sucks, did they get a 12yr old to design it? Did they do a children's competition to keep costs down?

what's the seating capacity? and what's the seating capacity of other major Europe stadiums?

Looks very boring compared to some other European stadiums. Expect it to come in over budget and at least a year late. ;)

It says in the piece that it will be 80,000 until the games have all finished after which it'll be reduced to 25,000.

Leyton Orient are in talks to move in. Don't see why they couldn't let West Ham move in. One football club is much the same as another, no? Apparently they wish for it to remain a dedicated athletics facility. Why let Orient in and not West Ham?

You what, taht's stupid. Aren't large Europe stadiums around 100k capacity?

We're spending the money so why not make it a great stadium and future venue.

The BBC article goes on about the 'temporary seating' that will be taken out after the games have finished, turning the 80,000 seater into a 25,000 capacity. Can't help but wonder how they're going to perform such a massive change without making the stadium look a mess! Maybe it says something about the pulling power of athletics ;)

They did the same at Eastlands after the Commonwealth games.

Well they designed Ashburton Grove and the grass is amazing so I'd expect them to have covered all the bases.

Id like it more if it wasnt costing the north of england, who will get nothing at all from this, 50% of most of the goverment money.
Plus it looks like a soup bowl with 10 year old drawings around the side, thats the best the british designers can come up with??

arr well....

So should us in the South have paid for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, who got nothing from it...

Guess it looks OK. Nothing inspired really.

What is with the awful music on the animation of what its going to look like, though. My ears bleed. :(

West Ham will certainly be looking for more than 25,000 - Upton park is currently around the 35,000 mark I think. If the Gvt do want to keep this as an athletics venue, then there's no getting around the fact that running tracks don't suit footy.

The Olympics games should have been in Brum/Man, just because London is the capital plus London has already had the Olympic games.

Manchester bid for the Olympics and failed. It's not London's fault that people worldwide prefer the idea of an Olympics in London.

Does that mean that you're in favour of London keeping all of the tax money it generates too? :p

It's been interesting watching the clearing work from the train each day. The amount of work that's gone on already is incredible. I'm looking forward to seeing the main stadium being build over the forth comings years but have to agree with Rotty, it does look a bit boring.

Everyone seems to say this as a kneejerk reaction, and majority or not, they're all wrong unfortunately. London was the only possible candidate. Any other option would simply have been laughed out of town.

Manchester did a great job of the Commonwealth games (oh how people have such short memories), and I fully expect some of the same people to be involved in the Olympics. There were just as many naysayers for the Commonwealths as well, but oh how wrong they were. IMHO you may disagree with the fact that we even bothered, but now that we have, perhaps just a little support and let's at least try to prove the doubters wrong. I know it goes against British tradition - stiff upper lip and all that.

As for reducing the stadium's size after the games, Manchester had to do that with the City of Manchester Stadium too. Outside the top few clubs there just isn't the demand and a half-empty stadium is frankly depressing. For events that need a big stadium in London, we already have Wembly.

Do you really think they where going to give any of it back anyway? it will be spent on the tube or tram lines for london, or a new bridge or some other project of no use to any but people in london, which is fine, just dont come and take my taxes to build a giant soup bowl...

I think you'll find London already pays a disproportionate amount of tax vs. public expenditure compared to the rest of the country. If you live in Wales or the north of England then your tax doesn't even cover your local services, let alone the Olympics in London.

just think, maybe in a couple of thousand years' time they'll find the ruins of what was once the "colosseum" of london ;)

Though knowing us, it'll all be biodegradable so there'll be nothing left bar a few million plastic chairs
