Got a new 500 GB hard drive so fitted it and all was working fine. Suddenly PC crashed and basically never came back to life :(

I have literally stripped the whole PC down so it is just the motherboard and CPU. When I turn it on the fan will spin for literally 1 second but that's it.

I have shorted the pins on the power supply and that seems to work fine. Any ideas what it might be ???

The motherboard is currently sat on a table so guess it is not shrting out otherwise it won't turn on at all and not near anything metal ?

Kinda stuck at what else it might be now ??? Any ideas ?

I'm in the same boat as you. My pc wont boot,no beeps,no bios menu no nothing. I'm thinking its either the CPU or motherboard, no idea really. I don't want to change the parts as it'll void the warrenty.

I bought my system from OC so I'm just sending the whole thing back for repair. Such a pain as all the new games are coming out now.

ok have even taken out the CPU / heatsink.

THe psu fan spins for a millisecond then that's it. Nothing.

And yeah have plugged in both psu bits 4 pin and 20 pin. Looks like a dead motherboard, only 18 months old aswell :(

isn't the psu fan on a thermostat though?

I had the same problem when I first built my PC. I had to go back through the entire build unplugging everything one by one and trying it. It turned out that the connectors to the front USB ports on my case were stopping anything happening. I never did work out why, but as soon as I unplugged them everything fired up nicely! Maybe it is something like that...

This was on a P35C-DS3R if that helps.

Plug in the conectors to your mobo then push in each wire to make sure they are fully in.

If that dont work I think its a RMA job.

Do you have a spare PSU available you can atleast try? Cause the psu can still spin up, but it can still be faulty, faulty as in won't start the system up.

We get this at work, replacement psu sorts the issue normally.

I presume you have re-seated the cpu as well, just check the pins on the motherboard, make sure they are all ok and not bent (even slightely miss aligned)

And do you have RAM installed currently? Could try booting up without the RAM installed, atleast to see if the system will stay on, but you wont get any video output obviously.

but when shorting out the pins it works fine....

That doesn't mean much, I've seen many PSU's that will spin up if shorted, but which are in fact borked. (Usually visible by checking with a multi-meter, but even that's not a guarantee. I once had an antec that went **** up. Voltages seemed OK but it just wouldn't power up a system. Turned out to be faulty.)

My guess/suspicions currently still lies on the PSU tbh... The PSU is old, fairly low wattage, and you've just increased the load on it by adding a drive. My spidey-sense says the PSU's given up the ghost. But as always, I could be wrong!

thanks for all suggestions.

Can acutally try a PSU tonight which would be good. Suppose technically adding the extra drive took the psu over the edge. :p
