This is question is mainly aimed at IT techies in offices and educational establishments. Any size or situation.

Are your PCs at your work left on 24/7? If so, what are your reasons.

We have a commitment to turn off any non-essential equipment. Including lights, etc.

most client pc's will be turned off when the user goes home, however the infrastructure like the servers and network will stay on

our WSUS is set to deliver updates at lunch time on client pc's

the company here is commited to turning things off which includes monitors and printers every night the only things still on are the servers, network kit and IP phones.

350 PCs at our office and they are all left on. Mainly to do virus scans and windows updates without disturbing our users.

All servers are also on 24/7 for backups

24/7 in the week - Takes an age to boot up, but i turn it off over the weekend for a rest.

I always shut down all machines if I am on the last shifts of the day at work - just looking at what I can see in the room ahead of me its about 36 x 400W here alone that is being used!

I also try to turn off my machines at home unless it is downloading overnight or encoding etc.

Out of interest, how long does it take you to shutdown all your systems? And when do they do the maintenance tasks if not at night?

It's a university - it's only for shutdown of all the open access rooms for students to use for general access, everything else that is more intense use (servers etc) remain on.

With the rising costs of electricity, you can save yourself quite a bit by shutting down your PC at the end of the day.

Let's say you're at your PC for 10 hours a day. If your PC draws 200W on average, that means it takes 5 hours to use one unit of electricity. One unit costs about £0.16 last time I checked, so you'd be saving 45p a day by switching off at the end of the day. That's £2.50 a week (5 days a week) or £125 a year. That's a new graphics card for a lot of people. :p

why are people worried about waiting for their computer to start in the morning. it will take all of 1 minute... read the paper / get a cup of tea in that time. its really not that difficult...

We have the best part of 1200 PCs, in a college environment. Most people just left them on overnight. So we now have shutdown scripts running to knock all the machines off at 9pm.
Saves the college a fortune.

We do have around 40 servers running 24/7 although we are looking to VMware what we can to save more cost.

I leave my work machine on 24/7, but that is so I can remote into work to fix things from home.

I switch my pc when i go to bed or have a schedular set if im downloading. i just hate the sound of the fans even though they are quite low. I'm not exactly bothered about the time it takes to switch on in the morning or whenever cause i usually go get a drink or toilet anyway
