PCs left of 24/7

We have the best part of 1200 PCs, in a college environment. Most people just left them on overnight. So we now have shutdown scripts running to knock all the machines off at 9pm.
Saves the college a fortune.

We do have around 40 servers running 24/7 although we are looking to VMware what we can to save more cost.

I leave my work machine on 24/7, but that is so I can remote into work to fix things from home.

When do you carry out auto updates, av updates, defrags?

How do you shut them down and how do you bring them back on? Or do you leave that to the staff?

All left on here. The network setup is naff.

Data saved on your desktop is stored on a fileserver, and people here tend to have up to a couple of gigs on their desktop (patch files, copies of client software)...you could imagine the carnage if everyone booted thier pc's at the same time...our network would curl up and die.

we have enough trouble with the exchange server, without adding to our woes. (server in london, office in dublin, london admins dont care if our connection to the server flakes out, which it does. several times a day.)

No, im not in the IT department here, nor would I want to be.

All ours our left on 24/7.....several hundred dual screen rigs......all the lights on 24/7 too.....

Some of the PC's have to be on as the office is 24/7 and are always in use. But a large majority really should be turned off.

People leave everything on here, becasue they say it's just easyier, bloody people can't be bothere to bend down and press a button. They're going to have a mighty shock when the new shutdown script is deployed. :D

Should ave about 8k a year, wonder if I will see any of that :( :p

its actually good for a pc's health { or any electrical equipment } to always have current flowing through as the constant re-heating and cooling { turning off and on} shortens the life of a pc, specifically hard drives, they fail the most at boot, rather than at any other time. also thats why televisions have standby switch , for this reason , to always have current running through , keep the circuits warm.

Holy moly! Are those roaming profiles?

What would be the effect if staff came in at the same time in the morning and turned the PCs on all at the same time?

How much of lifespan shortage is it?

The only thing good i have to say about the RM (research machines) network infastructure is the ability to schedule shutdowns startups and restarts etc.. otherwise i hate it with a passion :D

Ah well, can't have everything.

/me kicks back feet on desk and admires HP setup

At our college, from what I know the computers have scripts to shutdown about 8pm-midnight and considering the amount of computers they have I'd say it's a good idea. I think there are around 400+ in our college.

I'm in a secondary school. ICT suites get turned off with a script at 8pm. We are considering switching off classroom PCs aswell.

Our biggest consern is people leaving projectors switched on.
