hey guys.
just wanted a little input on what I should expect or how I could go abouts this.

I started a thread last year about my MBP being stolen and unfortunately even getting in touch with apple there was nothing I could do. I still kept the little police leaflet with the officer's name and crime number though. I had the serial number because I had to bring the MBP in for logicboard replacement.

anyway, yesterday I got an email from apple regarding customer service feedback. They send this out automatically when you call them. I thought this was strange as I hadn't contacted them for awhile.
I called apple and apparently the guy had to do a search for product serial number. I obviously didn't have 1 but I still kept the serial number of my macbook pro that was stolen in june-ish 06. The rep told me that its registered under a different name and that they can't give out details to me.

I called the police number on the leaflet and left my details and the crime number and hopefully the officer dealing with my case get back to me.

I know its still a long shot, and its gonna take a VERY long time. but at least its something :)
Apple is pretty crap at handling stolen products because I've contacted them several times and told them to mark that specific serial number as stolen!

just have to wait and see now

Get a letter off to Apple telling them what's happened, don't try and do it over the phone.

thanks for the reply guys.
will this help? I guess it means I have something in writing. will get on it :)

Lol ^ @ red.
I do hope it all works out for you. I wouldnt stand for it if the police try to fob you off thats for sure!!

can they do this? :S
the operator left an email for the officer. just waiting to hear/if I do hear from him. I guess will give it a few days?

They're not going to just give you someone else's details over the phone, but in a letter to them you could enclose details of the crime and perhaps photocopies of relevant documents as proof.

You could also give Apple the contact details of the Officer you've dealt with if you have them available, should they want to know more.

You can hardly expect apple to find your stolen laptop, if you really wanted to prevent theft you should have installed a program that called home every so often, or installed a gps transmitter in the laptop.

Excatly how would that have prevented the theft?

One piece of advice! Keep badgering the police non-stop until they do something concrete. Get yourself down to the relevant station and ask to see the PC whose number you have in person at least 3 times a week, otherwise they'll just forget about it.

Never heard of the fact you can format HDD's nowdays?

Thats pretty shocking. I'd deffinatly be writting to them as posted above. I'd hope that once in the hands of the right person at apple they will assist you and the police!

Best of luck!

A similar thing happened to my Dad, although it was a generator.

He hired it out to someone and basically they just dissapeared. By pure luck he found that the guy was trying to sell it on Ebay, so he contacted the police.

Now this is the part you won't believe. The police wanted my Dad to go over to this guys house and simply try and get it back, they didn't even seem interested in getting involved. I mean WTF, ridiculous. Just shows you what a state the police is in these days.

Because the average thief is going to do that....

Not going to help much though if you have gps, and some programs can avoid the formatting of a hdd.

I think you are doubting the intelligence of the populous.

Never underestimate stupidity.

Not a lot can withstand be overwritten with '0's.

If you report your laptop stolen to Apple, they will log in into the system and if the thief brings it in for repair to an Apple Store, they will retain it and call the original owner.

Now that is an utter joke. I can't say I'm all that supprised though. But come on, that is taking the micky a wee bit. I wouldnt have stud for that, thats for sure!!
