How much meat do you eat?

Am I missing something here? What bad publicity?
Specifically, there was that medical report the other day that listed bacon, processed meat and red meat in general as more likely to cause cancer ... it always seemed to me that it was conventional wisdom that too much red meat was bad for you ...

I don't know how much faith I put in stuff like that report to be honest, it's like everything else I s'pose - eat the 'wrong' stuff in moderation and it'll do you no harm at all ...

EDIT: Too slow ...

everyday.

lunch and tea.
sliced beef or pork in pita bread for lunch, tea will usually be the size of 1 chicken breast but could be any meat.

the trouble is all those are from stats and not controlled research. If you eat large qautities of red meat your also likely to eat unhealthily. So the affect could be red meat or it could be caused by there other unhealthy diet regimes. Eat healthly and don't worry if it's red or white meat.

Yeah it's a bit odd that they call themselves vegetarians as they aren't technically.

I haven't been veggie too long though (about 3 months) I converted for the missus! :)

Whipped! :p

Everyday I eat meat. Not as much as I'd like though... If it were upto me I'd eat steak everyday.

Absolutely - moderation in all things ...

/takes off halo :D

is that a matter of opinion? I don't really see any logical line you can draw between eating a lot of red meat and eating unhealthily

yes it's a matter of opinion, but I expect if you look at the numbers it true. If your a health freak, you will generally eat white meat and a lot of fish. If you lots and lots of meat. That generally means you'll have meat for breakfast as well.

I just wanted to check, is all. I've heard that red meat is supposedly healthy, but I'd not heard anything about red meat eaters eating unhealthily otherwise.

Out of curiosity, where can I look at these 'numbers'? It can't have been a high profile study

No idea. As I've said there's been very little real studies, where scientists actually control diet. they just take 5000 people look at there diet and then follow them for 20 years. It's not all red meat eaters, it's just in general high meat eaters will eat unhealthily compared to those that don't.

Also battery farmed chicken isn't as healthy as it used to be and can't be higher in fat than other meats. If you want healthy meat you need free range that exercise, not stuff that is cooped up and over feed.

Because you don't have a balanced diet.

so, by eating a lot of red meat, you can't possibly get a balanced diet? I'm no dietician, but I find that difficult to believe

(as it's not been quantified, I'd say a lot of red meat is 4 main meals a week, and allowing for a beef sandwich/salad at lunch or something similar)

No tahts not what we are saying, but on general they'll ahve a higher proportion of unbalanced diets.

you take 5000 people who avoide red meat. You might have 1000 taht don't have a balanced diet, the chances are a fair portion are avoiding red meat due to health concerns so it stands to reason they also regulate the rest of there food.

You then take 5000 high red meat eaters, these are less likely to regulat there diet so you might have 1500 unbalanced diets out of that 5000.

So on general high red meat eaters eat unhelathly.

This is why these stats can't be taken seriously.

If they want to proof red meat is unhealthy, you need to take 10000 people.

5000 eat and drink the exact same thing apart from have the equivalent in something like tofu as 5000 who eat the same thing but with red meat,

If I was having chicken breast I'd probably have around 3 - but I eat about 3000-3500 calories a day. I try and keep my protein intake fairly high.

Per week, I have meat every day sometimes different types of meat in a day. But I try and vary it as much as possible.

I also have fish at least twice a week.

Along with this I eat a lot of fruit and a lot of veg - it all balances out quite well. But I'm a health freak :D (i.e. no crisps, chocolate/sweets or fizzy drinks).

that all just seems like figures you've plucked out of the air there.

I can kinda see what you're getting at, but it seems like a bit of a false syllogism to me.

people who don't eat red meat are more likely to be concerned about their diet, so people who don't avoid red meat are less likely to be concerned about their diet.

I can see your logic, but I'm afraid I'm not on board with that way of thinking without seeing some stats

Hmmm I normally eat about 1500 calories a day, and I eat meat about 3 meals a week. I'm just not that bothered about it.
