Radio Antennae motor bust - will this idea work?

So, i've got one of those mid 90's machine gun style radio ariels thats given up the ghost, it won't go up or down (although, i get a signal still)

I was thinking of running some wire along the roof lining of the car to act as a new ariel and blocking off the hole for the old one (really can't be bothered with the 50 quid from toyota). What would the reception be like there?

I think on my mum's old XR3i it had the radio aerial in or around the rear window, can't remember what my dad told me being so long ago

I believe you can get a generic replacement motorised-aeriel from a certain electrical stockist beginning with an 'M'.... there is a guy on the MR2OC who is using one, sure there is a fitting guide and it wasn't expensive at all... worth checking out anyway!
