Verified by visa service... MY Anger!!!

HSBC stopped a dodgy looking transaction coming out of my account, got a phone call while still in the estate agents who'd just put through the payment, verified it on the phone, and 30 secs later payment was accepted. Wasn't too painful to be honest.

Not quite what he is on about. That's more of the fraud department of the bank being proactive. Verified By Visa is an electronic means of verifying that you are the card holder, you have to sign up to it with personal details that allow you to create an account, when you shop at somewhere that uses VBV it then provides more of a 2 factor authentication, firstly that you have all the card details (name/date/card number'security number etc) you would usually put in, then it pops up another screen asking for your VBV username & Password, get it wrong and it won't allow the transaction to go through (so i believe, never had one fail)

Got to say i've used VBV online for about 2 years now on a number of sites, never had a problem with it.

I'm sorry to hear about your probz. Theze thingz happenz.

lol that cracked me up,

was wondering if i was the only one who spotted it.

I dont know why people moan about these things, people moan when their money isnt secure, they moan when banks try to make it more secure.

Sure the system fails from time to time, as has happened with you when trying to set it up.

Hang on, i would be the same moaning that is, but with out the Z's :D

unlucky dude, chill....

send gibbo an email and he may sort the prices out for you.

I only heard of VBV when I tried to buy my PC parts from OCuk at the beginning of the year. Signing up was a piece of cake, and I haven't found a site that uses it since then. Still, for a couple of minutes putting my details in, it means that there is a lower chance of people buying stuff with me card online, then who am I to complain :)

It's abbey's fault, not visa. Visa created the framework for 3d-secure (verified by visa and mastercard securecode are both just brand names for 3d-secure, I believe american express and JCB are working on compatible schemes).

Could you imagine going into a shop the first day they mandated chip and pin machines and your bank hadn't told you anything, hadn't wrote to you, and hadn't given you a chip card and pin?

That's the situation with 3D-Secure at the moment because the banks here in the UK are sticking their head in the sand and hope it will go away - they will have to sort it out eventually as visa and mastercard are pushing it.

Maestro (mastercard debit card basically) is now required to use 3d-secure online, any merchant taking maestro without 3d-secure is breaking card scheme rules which while largely toothless could get them into trouble. It's only a matter of time until visa and mastercard take the plunge and require it of all their cards, I do hope banks bother to write to their customers before this happens :(

That would have been good, coz before i made the purchase on OCUK i had never heard of visa verification.

The whole situation wouldn't of bothered me if i'd have known about it before.

FOR THE RECORD, i am happy that visa verify increases online protection as i use my card a lot online :).
