Whats the best alternative to Teamspeak?

Thanks Dyson. So can people using BF2 in-game voice, Vent, and TS all hear and communicate with each other in-game or only those on the same server? If they have to be on the same, how on earth do teams arrange to be able to talk to each other usefully?

Vent and TS2 are their own apps, running independently from any game. BF2 in-game voice only works whilst playing BF2 in an online server.

How much do people pay for their Vent/TS2 servers?

We pay £28 a year for a 20 man server.

About 8 quid a month for a 60 man TS server with all the codecs unlocked, its a fair bit more than you, but then its got 3 times the maximum size :)

Speex 25kbps sounds very clear, its all about mic and headset, my mate sounds on my TS server like he does on the phone. As I already said, its largely down to headset/mics involved and the server. High setting TS sounds fine, and sounds clearer than calling my mates mobile phone, lower quality codecs obviously sound rubbish, and a lot of cheap/free servers use these lower bitrate codecs ie 16kbps gsm/speex.
They're not a good point to compare from though. Because Vent can use higher bitrate codecs, it CAN (often doesnt), sound clearer than high settings TS, but tends to induce more lag than TS does. I've used quite a few vent servers were there's been horrible sound issues/lag.

Vent is amazingly better than Teamspeak.

The difference in sound is astonishing. Your friends will go from sounding like an 8 year old boy to a fully grown 30 year old man ;D

Yeah, you know what I mean. Vent's codecs are so much clearer than TS'

While were on this topic, are there any talk programs (irrespective of quality to a degree) that either allow a server to be hosted or communication to be passed through a specified port? Basically I have a friend at university and they cannot join and TS or vent server because the admins block most of the 8xxx ports, i believe only a small selection of the 6xxx ports are available. I have looked around but to no avail...maybe anything that even can be used on a network (using Hamachi to create a false-network). Only other criteria is preferably one that can use voice activation but not essential.

Set your TS up correctly and make sure your friends sound is set up correctly too (makes a lot of difference with TS).
Only other alternative is Vent which isn't as good in my experience.

For TeamSpeak I usually find an empty public server with no password, join it and create a channel with the 25.9k Speex Codec and my friends who join all sound fine.

Same here. I've got a Teamspeak client running on my server. I use it to keep a channel with 12.3 codec and moderated open on a gameservers TS server.

Free!

Well technically i paid for it last year and then they charged me when i cancelled the recuring charge so i argued them and they kept the server up and refunded me. so it only cost paypal fees

ts is fine its lols with a 2.99 mic that ruin it or sit here eating it you know who you are.:p

Do i!. but he has a poor soundcard or something. 1 mic has a rattlesnake in the background the other mic if u go over a certain sound level it basically just destroys your ear drums with static
