*Gears Of War* Thread :o) Game Pics & Performance.

Has anyone with a Xbox Live Gold account signed in with the same details on Windows Live? I heard that if you have played the game already on the 360 using the same account some of the Acts will already be unlocked but I wasnt sure if that was true or not.

I can get all of Act 1 and 5 but not any of the others, completed them on 360 though.

they've done a prtyy good job in the porting. runs like silk on my rig but then i'd expect it to (c2d6750, 8800gtx). only time i get stutters is when the cut scenes loading. other than that its rock solid. tbh though the gameplay is a bit crap. its literally the same thing over and over again.

Can anyone tell me why i get the message "gears of war has stopped working" when i go into the options menu  is there any known issues yet with certain hardware ?

Couldn't be anything to do with different optical drives, system components or even a bad batch of discs of course...
Yeah I'm sure those add up to what, 5 hour install times, people have been whinging about? I think I'll still explain it with idiocy and some melodramatic need to overexaggerate things. :)

My optical drive is sub par at best, 16x DVD-RW drive over IDE. Everything else would make little difference, and if there were a problem with the disc itself then the game would have errors during install or not install at all.

As for the game itself: So much better than the 360 version that I couldn't really believe it myself. The graphics look so much more crisp and sharp (probaly to do with higher res more than anything) and the mouse/keyboard controls are such a breath of fresh air.

Runs beautifully maxed out too. :)

The game took about 30-40 mins to install for me, i have a nearly full 250gig HDD that i haven't defragged in months and a crappy old 16x dvd drive, it leads me to wonder how awful the computers are that belong to the people taking 2 hours+ to install - mine is terribly maintained.

I'm really enjoying this, between it and CoD4 my social life has died a horrible death.

M1710

C2D @ 2.16
2gb DDR2 @ 667
7900GTX @ stock

run perfectly fine all high except shadows on medium. never slows down (albeit the random stuttering which is getting annoying now)

Aye I think that will be your problem here but 30-40min isn't bad considering it.

I think the people talking about 5+ hours must be installing from floppies or something.

How is your performance and at what res/settings? I'm creeped out my Vista install is dodgy still, think I sorted it but just hope my PC is running normally. :p

Yeh, there probably is a lot of over exaggeration going on, had not seen anybody commenting on 5 hour load times

Your optical drive may be sub par but that doesn't mean it wont work better than others. As for sytem configuration, it could easily explain longer disc access/transfer times, but it would be expected to show on all discs not just one, if the disc is bad it may not always lead to errors, depends on just how bad it is. I've had bad discs that take quite a while to display contents but have never given me any errors.

still cant play this, still getting the 'wargame-g4wlive.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close' error within 3 mins of starting the game. Happens in menus and during game. It sucks cos i want to play!!

Not run Fraps on it but it runs beautiful, little tearing here and there but I can live with that. Resolution is 1680x1050 and I just maxed everything out in the options, AA was greyed out though as I'm on Windows XP. :)

So we have either this: -

1.) People talk crap and like to whinge, and I mean we're talking about the internet of all places.

Or we have this: -

2.) The people complaining about long install times might have bad discs that luckily aren't so bad they still actually play, and don't even give errors during the install process. Not only that, but while my disc drive is old and sub-par it may just be working perfectly, some people have a disc drive that is boned enough to make an install go up to five hours or whatever, but only in one game!

Hmmmm, I think we need to get Mr. Occam and his razor. Anyone got his number? :D :D

Ahhhh I see! Dx10 runs a lot worse I hear, especially with the AA on, I might just turn it off and see how much smoother it is, I bet it'll be even better.

Lack of servers on Gears atm though sadly, hope it picks up. :(

This is so annoying never had any problems with other game publishers soon as i get a m$ game nothing but problems , all drivers are up to date got latest dx10 user runtime and still getting the error. can anyone suggest anything ?

Not everybody lies.

You can dismiss my comments all you like, doesn't make them any less valid even if it is a minority of the cases.

Also, try reading it again, you seem to be confusing bad discs for bad disc drives.

guys ive sorted the crashing gow.exe has stopped working error by doing the following.

"run it as admin by right clicking on the startup.exe and telling it to run as admin. You can create a shotcut to the startup.exe on you desktop and skip the openeing the my cpu then clicking the cd crap. If you don't know where the startup.exe is it is in the your instalation drive then programfiles\microsoftgeames\gears of war\binaries\ then the file is called startup. Right click on that and send it to your desktop as a shortcut. Then right click on it and click the option to run it as admin... Problem solved"

Worked for me :D

Just got this and install took about 14 minutes on the dot, I guess those claims were made by idiots.

Going to go play it soon if I can decide between this and COD4 CE that also came today. :D

Im sorry? Idiots? I put the disk in, it took an hour and a half to install - does that make me an idiot? It was a fresh install of vista and its a brand new drive that I got today so dont you dare call me an idiot.

I have found a new player matches by the way, no ranked - I played some games and owned em all! I did however go to the leaderboards to see how many kills I had and everything is blank, even on my name - is anyone else getting this? Also Im sure on the 360 version you could view "me" - "alltime" instead of only being able to view your friends list and you being in there?
