Hey all,

Mate of mine who is as mechanically minded as a grapefruit (but works in intelligence lol) has had a few issues with his 2003 2.0 TDCi (115). It's got 90k on the clock, FSH and has been a spanner from day 1. He's paid £600 for a new clutch only to be told the diesel pump is shot and the repair bill will be...

Wait for it....

£3200!!!

Spanner monkey mechanic reckons it'll need a new pump and that the injectors will be shot as any bits that have come off the old pump will have killed the injectors as well. Now, for £3200 I would be expecting a brand new engine just about! Anyone shed any light on these TDCi lumps, I must admit to being ignorant of them having never owned anythoing that new!!!

I would try and source 2nd hand parts, the car is probaly worth less than 3.2k. I've seen a 55plate 130 TDCI Zetec Mondeo with 22k on the clock for 7k at a dealer (non ford though)

I'm more concerned that he's having his trousers pulled down and not even being lubed before penetration - are the diesel pumps really that rubbish that they break and fubar the engine???

The pumps are expensive guy at work had one changed and it was about £1500 just for the pump. I've not heard of that many going though however I beleave the injectors do go quite a bit on the TDCi engines.

It'll be cheaper than that to get a donor engine, I'm sure there are plenty of rear ended mondeos, focuses and galaxys able to supply a new 2l tdci lump. Hell you could buy a whole mondeo alongside its engine for what they're asking for the repair.

theres plenty of pumps on ebay.. i remember seeing one for £50 for my focus tdci i used to own

EDIT: just looked, none on :( just for 1.8's

It doesn't make any senses to me. Clutch fixed and now this?!

Because of £3200, it sounds like a dodgy dealer to me?

I've told him to go and get it diagnosed at Ford rather than someone who desn't seem to have a clue. We shall see. The guy is quoting £900 just for the pump.

Defo take it to another garage, £900 for the pump is about right so where on earth does the the other £2300 go injectors are about £120-150 each. Its not a long job to swap the injectors or the pump to warrant £1700 in labour

I assume the guy will have changed the fuel filter ? could give the same effect although could be a lot of other cheaper things.

what was the last pump you changed? i would say a pump on its own averages about £1700 on its own now easily, and double it again for a 'premium' manufacturer.

first thing i would do is get the injectors recoded, they often pick up faults due to electric issues, there's a white sticker with a serial number wrote on it that's on top of the rocker cover, a good garage with the right tools can use that code to reset the injectors, this works on the fords 75% of the time.

although if this was *straight* after a clutch change i would be checking that the CPS hasnt been damaged or the wiring tugged.

As I said above work mate had a 2L TDI Zafiera (sp?) pump replaced £1500 fitted at a dealer I think that included the fuel rail aswell but the injectors were fine. I beleave the pump itself was just over 1k

Hmm, fuel pumps shouldn't fail after 90k....

What planet are you on? High Pressure fuel pumps seem to always die around the 100k mark. Low Pressure pumps sometimes even earlier.

And £900 for the pump? You're being shafted. A recon unit is only £350 plus VAT with a new one being listed as £450 exchange.

BMW Bosch HP pumps only come in at around £450 so how a Ford unit is any dearer than that is anybodys guess.

And yes, it is a long job to swap the pump, but not any more than £240 worth of labour.
