How long can someone live with parents till they charge u for rent

as soon as they have an income ( except part time job while in full time education ) they should pay

My parents are a bit more generous - I've saved the money I've earned from work for when I move out (at uni at the moment). So when I graduate they can finally be rid of me as soon as possible :p

This thread is very apt considering I've just started a full-time temp job and my parents are asking for a contribution. I earn about £280 a week. 10% of that seem reasonable? :p

Paying some form of rent is just a common courtesy. And sometimes it is actually beneficial to the household. But whatever you pay mum and dad, it's still going to be far, far less than renting your own gaff.

Even if your lucky enough to have parents who are rolling in it, it still boosts your own self esteem (imho) if you're paying your own way.

Personally, if I ever had a family, I'd change the locks the day they left full time education. :D

I started paying £160 a month two or so years ago when i got my first job and got £1k+ a month. They were pretty happy with it and still are, as im saving most of it so i can rent my own place and although i'll like my own privacy and stuff i know im getting it easy now compared to paying for everything on my own.

I think that you should have to pay rent when you get into some form of job, and your parents can decide (whether it be full/part-time).
However, being only 15, i have all this to come, how much more expensive would it be to rent your own place? possibly with a room-mate or girlfriend?
As im sure some of your guys have experienced it?

Cheers for any advice guys,
Tuffty

Same, when I was on ~£1k a month I paid £160, im now up to earning £2k+ a month im paying £300.
Yup if i get a better job with more pay such as yourself i'll happily pay more, hopefully i'll have moved out by then though as for £300 i could add a bit more and have my own or share with a mate.

pay my mum 1 weeks wages a month, so £100
im at uni and work weekends.

can't believe some people are saying "nothing because my family arent tight"
its not tight! if you earn your own money pay your own way! its not free to live you know as much as you make think it is! my mum has never had enough money for the both of us to live! i always help my mum out when i can

mums quite generous with me, if im earning i pay rent, if im not, i dont, and its only £40 a week, so im not complaining

Hahahahahaha, Im so unlucky, me old dear said, as soon as you finish school, your paying me board mate - £130 a month!!

Im now 17 and am in a lot of debt left me job and currently looking for a new one, so no monies going to mother :(

How can someone at 17 be in debt

As soon as you are in full time employment (or part time and not in education (because you are lazy)) than you should be paying rent. My sister is paying £100 to live here while she saves up for her marriage so I assume it would be the same for me.

Theres ways of doing that without having to make your kids pay rent. I have never paid to live in my parents house yet I understand the value of money more than 99% of people my age.

You are the exception rather than the rule then. Most young people leave home without a single idea how to manage their finances and how expensive the real world is.

Some of this falls on the parents shoulders for not teaching them and in my eyes not charging them rent does them no favors later in life (although not in your case! :p )

My step-dad kicked off big time when I was unable to pay last months rent of £80.

Errr, I don't know if you hadn't realised, but I've been out of work for 4 months

What ticks me off big time is how whenever I question why my step-brother doesn't pay ANY rent at all (and he uses more food/electricity etc than I do), both my Mum and step-dad go on about how he shouldn't pay as he isn't working full time.

Well hellooooo... I don't work at all! Grrrrrrr... (that was last month's conversation... I'm back in work now, thank god - couldn't take another month of moaning, lol).

ROFL, did you actually read my post?

You think getting a job is easy? You think I just sat on my ass for 4 months twiddling my thumbs?

The internet doesn't half make me laugh sometimes :D

Oh, and have a  too

im on £370pm, and i pay my parents £80pm for Food, clean clothes and sometimes some socks as i forget to buy them and go around in the holiest socks!

I'm at uni at the moment and nearly 21 and i live at home and dont pay my mum or dad a penny. Nor have they asked me as they dont expect me to, as soon as i graduate though and start earning a decent enough wage i'll start paying them money. I still know the value of money just as much as any other person who 'pays their own way'.
