Sorted it, yep I did create a Live profile (well I logged into my Windows Live account and it tagged me up, just chose a gamertag and all done)
What Games For Windows fails to do though is create the My Games folder in your documents folder and then the subfolders needed - this only happens if you have your mydocs folder mapped to a HDD not on the C drive as the exact same happened with UT3 Demo but I blamed the issue on it being a BETA demo but it seems it's a retail issue now that MS need to fix.
I created the SubDIR structure (got Dannage onIRC to list the folders) then loaded the game and it saved the settings in the relevant folders!
