Radeon HD 3870 /w QX9650 Preliminary Test

There remains just the 2 questions AA performance and UK pricing, the way the dollar is will we be looking at around £120 ?

This does not sound good then, 1GBXT has the same performance as the 512MBXT, how can ATI expect people to purchase these new cards with no decent increase in performance, me thinks the 8800GT is going to have a very merry XMAS.;)

HI there

I think its fairly simple to be honest, these new ones are half the price, consume half the power and support new features. :)

A 2900 XT 1GB GDDR4 is not a bad performing card either and these new RV670 cards are very overclockable or at least the early samples are.

They won't be that cheap, well not the HD3870 as UK Etailors need to put margin in place and cover any shipping cost involved too.

Well they can not be a lot more because by the time vat is added they will be approaching 8800GT prices...allbeit unavailable ATM !

HI there

HD3870 is to compete against 8800 GT, so it will be priced similar or a little less.

The HD3850 competes more against the likes of the 8600 GTS and should be quite a bit quicker than that, so NV don't really have a product to compete with the HD3850 until some cheap 256MB 8800 GT's come along which will be quicker than the HD3850.

If these new cards come in at around the £130-150 mark, then they will be well worth considering, especially if ATI can get some stonking drivers out for them, the power usage is very impresive and temps look great. I hope they do sell, competition is good as we all well know.;)

I hope ATI are secretly putting out these not so great cards whilst working on a monster. I'm sorry for being a bit negative about this all. I've had ATI for 95% of the time and would love to see something special but have been nothing but disappointed since after the X1900 series.

I've had it with ATI and crap AA performances (in some titles) with this 2900 and if this new card is the same then I'm off to the green side after the year. I've been playing with my m8's GTX for the last 2 weeks and putting my 2900 back in has seen a drop in performances as well as Gears of War crashing after running perfectly on the GTX. Roll on next year :D.

Well the problem there is if people can get a pair for crossfire for under £300 even if ATI package 2 in 1 box to reduce costs, they will sell lots !
At £400 it's not so attractive.

The major factor in all of this will be availability, for ATI to really nail it they have to have good availability ! But I read ATI were pushing the 3850's which would only mean 3870's were short....proberly a lack of coolers or boxes ;)

Yes I noticed that with the shaders. I can only assume gpuid is broken.

It might be gpuid uses a lookup table based on the card id for its info rather than querying the hardware directly.

Looking forward to some real game results.

Might be tempted to buy one for a play.
the shaders and rops are the same as the 2900..

the 3870 is slightly quicker than 2900 XT. but that because of the clocked at 775mhz. if u underclock it to 743mhz it'll run same as the 2900xt... or overclock the 2900 to 775mhz and it should run the same as the 3870...

the 3850 should be able to get to 2900xt speeds by overclocking it..

Hi there

Well in HD3850 we expect to have around 300+ in stock for day of launch.

On HD3870 we are hoping to have 250-300 in stock for launch day.

Its certainly better numbers than NVIDIA had on 8800 GT and hopefully ATI will keep stock flowing for the following week.

HD3870 and HD3850 Crossfire well together and give good performance.

Also with CrossfireX you can put upto 4 HD3870 into Crossfire, VERY FAST!

HI there

Good information there! ;)

As I've been saying all along HD3870 will perform similar to 1Gb 2900 XT GDDR4 which is a fast card, except HD3870 half the price, better technology and UVD now built in. :)

I completely missed HD3850 overclocking potential though which is very true and I might go and test one now to see how it overclocks, could be an absolute bargain if it can clock well. :)
