Radeon HD 3870 /w QX9650 Preliminary Test

Yeah im saying no more on these cards now, ive been banging on for months saying they are just the 2900's again with a different name, and the proof is out now, so no need for me to carry on, so everyone rejoice, Loadsa has left the 3870/50 building. :D:D

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the performance of the 38xx series or the 2900XT, I'm just calling into question we.pcinlife.com's dodgy looking charts :)
but tbh the fps looks about right.. yes the chart bars are abit long, but i guess they trying to get people thinking the 3870 is much faster which it isn't...

Possibly, ATI are going for a "tick tock" strategy like nVidia and this is the "tock" (die shrink) rather than the "tick" (new architecture).

Don't forget, Peyryn only shows 5-10% gains on Conroe.

these will be great to upgrade base systems from hp etc which come with less than stellar power supplies. I can see them going into a lot of volume builds at that price & power utilisation and look damn near perfect for media pc's.
if they run really well in xfire - especially if as stated earlier you can match a 3870 with *** cheaper 3850 then you have a great solution for a lot of folks without havign to upgrade power supplies.

HI there

I think the bangers will be the HD3850's, far far cheaper than a 2900 XT, in fact even cheaper than a 2900 Pro but capable of clocking upto and around 2900 XT performance for sub 2900 Pro pricing. :)

Hi there

Yes product in stock, am playing with one now and yes once NDA lifts, product will be on site. We already have them setup ready to go, just waiting for NDA to lift and then I can unhide the products.

:(

Gibbo why carnt you have the price on the page when the products are 'hidden'?

Just seen the 3870's listed at $268.99 in the states, which works out at £128.12 here, and the 3850's at $217.99, which is £103.83, obviously won't be that low, but gives you an idea. :)

I would expect around the £150 mark...

I wouldn't mind seeing a 3870 with a 512bit memory bus ;-) Oh wait that might be ATI's next top card.

two 3870's in crossfire could it beat a 8800 Ultra?

without AA maybe yes.. with AA maybe no because AA on the 38x0 seems worser than the 2900..
