Had the ring of death problem today and got onto MS they sorted out all the details ect for the pickup under warranty then just out of curiosity turned it on to see if I left a disk in before I unplugged it all ready to be sent away and the dam thing decided to work. So what do I do? send it off or not cant decide. I had allready tried and checked all the cables and everything before I called MS and it still would not boot just gave the three red lights, the furthest it did get was displaying about half ther intro screen. Then I sort it all out to be repaired and it resurected its self?. Anyone had same thing happen?.

I use it on a component cable for HD and it has two controllers and a memory card never got around to getting a hdd as I dont use it that much got one of each in this generation of the consoles and the other two get used more. It will work with any of the controllers or memory card plugged in or all at the same time so I cant see it being those that caused the red lights.

My current 360 (which was a refurb in the first place) got the red rings the other day. It also briefly red ringed when I first got it back about a year ago and has worked ever since, so I got an extra year out of it since it first got the red rings.

Tough decision, it probably will die at some point, but sending it off now means waiting on a lot of very good games.

Im not so bothered about the new games or the time it would take the get back the console im just confused as to weather I should send it back or not after it resurected its self, wonder if I send it back and MS will say nothing wrong with this pal your off your head.

Send it off mate. If its given you the 3ROD once it will do it again. The build quality and design of the console is a joke. I resurrected one from the 3ROD and so far to keep it going I've had to:

mod the fans to 12v
mod the fan shroud for better airflow
mod the case for better airflow
drill holes in the motherboard for better heatsink attachment

I'm still playing it with the lid off just to keep the damn thing from overheating.

Its built on a budget. The problem many have is that because of inefficient cooling and airflow the motherboard gets hot. Then because of badly designed heatsink clamps the board warps. Finally, because of the cheap solder MS uses, the board warping causes the solder joints to break which results in 3ROD.

MS will take it back without question. God knows how many they've had back already.

Who knows, as I said, I got an extra year after it first red ringed so it could just be a minor blip. It is probably an indication of how it will eventually turn out though, the question is when.

Plenty of time left on the 3yr warranty so while it works, I'd keep it.

Why didn't you just send your Xbox360 back V0id:confused:
Out of warranty.
Not just tried the X clamp replacement mod?
Thats what I meant by "drill holes in the motherboard for better heatsink attachment" - was trying to make it easier for people who weren't familiar with all the 360 mods. Its still on death row however, the mods are just a temporary reprieve. My Gamertag sums it up.
