Do we need high street banks?

the trouble is they need emptying several times a day, if they where used often, especially the ones with take coins. Also compared to a normal cash machine there open to a lot more abuse as you have to put things in it. How often do you think people would put objects in it, that it's not designed to take.

The one in HSBC only needs to be emptied once a day. You need a card to even get the drawer open so I doubt there'd be much abuse. You could be caught easily. And just keep them in shopping centres or whatever, you don't need one next to every corner shop like cash machines.

I deal with cheques a lot with my business, ditto large quantities of cash.

Just because you dont use highstreet banks doesnt mean that they are pointless :p

I last went into mine Friday, in fact I've been into more times in the last 3 months than the last year.

As far as I know, there is no way for me to change my address, name and such like online. And, a 20 minute walk never does any harm, so there is no reason to phone them. :)

yes. Not everyone is comfortable with internet banking. My dad dosn't like putting his bank details online at all, he dosn't feel it's safe. Also people who don't have/want a computer wouldn't have internet banking. As saidit's great if you can work it and trust the website with your personal information but if you can't work a computer you need the high street bank. Besides it's keeping a lot of people in jobs

Highstreet banks are still needed.
Cheques are still needed (for things like paying tradesmen when you need a transaction record). I can see them getting phased out in the medium-long term though.

HSBC seem to have gone all modern now though, the branch in Salisbury is basically just a huge room full of fancy ATMs, with a couple of staff wandering around asking if people need help. It's kinda weird actually, reminds me a bit of mobile phone shops.

As an aside, I do wonder what will happen in the future in terms of people dying and loads of internet banking accounts just left lying around dormant that relatives didn't know about. With traditional savings accounts etc you get a passbook which would get found, but with these 'paperless' accounts you get nowadays it may be much tougher to sort out finances of the deceased.

bank transfer is just like paying a tradesman via cheque.

You hand a piece of paper to stranger!

There is a record more so when doing a transfer.

I like the fact that I can walk into my bank and discuss my banking needs with a human, say over a cup of coffee.

Also, some regular stuff cannot be done over the Internet or phone so the common high street banks are needed. It's a shame that they seem to be a dying breed just like the Post Office.

As I adhered to in my post, in the medium-long term I can see cheques being phased out. But at present I know some tradesmen would tell me just exactly where I could stick my bank transfer... :)

LOL

Its not their fault they don't know any different.

Tell them its instant and they dont have to wait 5 working days for their money to appear.:p

You seem to be living in some sort of fantasy land where everyone will do exactly as you say :)

Whether or not we as individuals think there is any particular theoretical need for bank branches or cheques, the fact is that the perceptions of other people mean that we do.

Cheques can also be quite convienient in that:

a) You don't need access to a computer
b) You don't need to know any account information other than the payee name
c) They take around 10 seconds to write, my PC doesn't even boot up Windows that quick.

This means that even if the person/company you are paying doesn't have their details to hand, you could still give them the cheque.

A true businessman has a bank account in all highstreet banks.

So

HSBC-HSBC
BARCLAYS-BARCLAYS
NATWEST-NATWEST

I find it hard to believe that a businessman keeps his eggs all in one basket.

that's stupid, more hassle, no rewards.

how about halifax - halifax that still takes 24hours.

you would need about 15 accounts.

So without a bank how would we open new accounts etc?

I don't fancy mailing off my passport id and some old bills all the time.

Wouldn't a buissnes man just have it all in the best interest account that is suitable?
