Didn't post this at 3am as I was quite angry...

Between 10 and 1 last night, someone was nice enough to bend the top of my door down, unlock and push my car back onto the bit between the driveway and road, then take out my steering wheel! Which of course is nowhere to be seen.

My MOT's due on Tuesday 50 miles away, so I'd like to get a replacement wheel before then.

Will an Astra steering wheel from a similar model year fit (there looks like one available at local breakers) and how easy is it to attach a new steering wheel? I tinker with computers not cars :(

As much as I hate bumping, can nobody give me some guidance on this (80 views and no response at all :()? I need to try and get things sorted tomorrow so I can drive it at least but don't know where to start. I've now been informed that the steering wheel was probably kicked in an attempt to breaking the steering lock and simply sheared off. Is there a standard fitting for steering wheels? The Astra one is still the nearest I can find on local scrapyards' sites...

Got a couple of photos of it in case they help?

What tools am I likely to need too? :)

Any help appreciated!

That does indeed look like its sheared off  :(

I think on these you have to drill out the security bolts before you can remove the column though...remember to change the ignition barrels over unless you want different keys.

How much of it will have to be removed?

I thought it would be just a case of removing that remainder of the metal in the middle and reattaching a new wheel?

And is the airbag likely to have gone off when the wheel broke off? Hope it injured one of the scallies.

If I remeber correctly you can split these inside the car? (havent had a vauxhall for quite a while) failing that, it will have to be at the universal joint where the column comes through the bulkhead.

You will have to remove the shroud and switches, unbolt, remove, bolt the new one in....remembering that these arent normal bolts to undo, otherwise they would be even easier to steal!!

So is the ignition barrel part of the steering wheel assembly? I presumed the only bit I'd have to unscrew that bit down the middle. This is sounding more complicated than I dare attempt and I'm still no closer to finding a replacement wheel, you any idea if a similar Astra one would fit?

Like IainB, I'm sure that spline should be longer! Never seen one shear before though.

You won't be able to just buy another wheel on its own, there isn't anything to bolt it to! I don't know if these are 1 part or multipart columns.

To change it you need to remove it (it is the majority of the steering column) which means also removing the ignition barrel, indicator/wiper stalks, plastic shrouding etc. You may have to drill out the bolts as they usually use shear bolts that are supposed to snap off when you tighten them.

Good luck, whilst it isn't the end of the world, it's not really a job for novices either.

I have never seen a column sheared off like that

What year is the Corsa? An Astra steering column will not fit AFAIK.

You will probably need a complete second hand steering column, though it should be fairly cheap for a Corsa. Either get a column complete with ignition switch and key and live with having a different key for ignition and doors, or the ignition lock barrels can probably be removed and swapped over, or remove security bolts holding the ignition lock assembly to the column (drill out, chisel or weld nuts to the top of them) and swap it over using new bolts.

You will need another "clockspring" as well as another steering wheel, this is the bit that connects between the yellow cable and the airbag in the steering column and allows rotation.

It almost looks too straight and perfect to have sheared, but them splines should almost definatly be much longer.
Looks like it will be a pig of job sorting that out :(

This is just sounding better and better

There's no way I'm going to be able to do this, time for some garage calls in the morning I think. Any ideas how much it would cost to do this work? I was trying to avoid the £250 excess on the insurance, but it might be better to just make it their problem...

it doesnt look sheared to me. from memory, the new wheel (from any similar age Astra, even Nova) pushes that sping down as it locates on to the column and then the bolt enters into the end and has a nice large bulky washer on it.

If it is sheared, then Holy Cow!

It is a perfectly clean shear if it is, this is why I had doubts when the Crime Scene guy said that. Those were the best pictures my phone would take...

Thats sheared ..its about 1" to short . Your gonna have to do the collum .. As other have mentioned not sure if u can ubolt from the inside .

Persil

could have been nicked to order for the airbag
there was a spate of it a couple of years ago, as new airbags cost quite a bit if they have gone off, so they nick them instead

That was my first thought that someone had just stolen it for having the wheel, but the cracked surround at the bottom implies some force was used, which tied in with what the police guy said...

The teeth around the end aren't very long, guessing that's the bit that's missing?

An update:

After mechanic inspection, he says it's definitely been sheared and it's looking like I will need a new column. They're trying to find a second hand one, as apparently Vauxhall one would be very expensive. Hence why it was probably stolen in the first place...

Cheers for the help anyway :)
