Kit car engine suggestion.

Far too big and too heavy for a kit.

I dunno...I seem to remember CCC testing an M3-powered Caterham about ten years agoto great acclaim... And the E30 lump can't weigh more than a Pinto surely? Pintos were the caterfield mainstay for decades.

XE on Bike TBs would be my weapon of choice...230bhpish, please.

PS: Don't go bike engined unless you're 450Kg or less.

Ah.....Nissan 200SX turbo lump

or a Cosworth lump.......this one was evil.....

go on, how do they perform tune for tune and for reliability etc?

My friend is getting his Tiger se7en type car in a couple of weeks. 180bhp 2.0Zetec engine and Im probably storing it in my garage for a month or so. Cant wait to see how that goes, the 1.6 superlight I took round donnigton was impressive enough. These big power (300bhp+) ones can't be that useable can they?

The E30 lump probably weighs the same, but I'd be surprised if the member who suggested M3 meant anything other than the E46 6 pot.

Looks the part and I am sure it would go like stink too, but most of these types of engines need lots of fettling on a regular basis to run cleanly, most kit cars spend 95% of the year parked up and resting, and I suspect that would mean lots of tweaking and fiddling every time you wanted to take it out for a spin.

Cracking lump mind.

I'm not so sure mate. These bike V8's tend to use as many standard components as possible, so they should, in theory, be as reliable as the bike they came from. Now if you upped the ante and started pushing boundaries with cams/timing/fuelling etc then i'd have to agree with you.

The cossie lump is the one. So easy to work on. Ive built loads to high spec. Its an absolute masterpiece

I'm a huge fan of the YB. I've owned a few and modded 'em as well, but they're not such a good choice for something like a seven. The YB is tall, heavy and more importantly it's turbocharged...something less than desireable for a drivers car particularly one of such a low kerb weight.

Whats wrong with a lightly tuned 2l zetec, you could have one ready to go for prolly less than a grand (presuming you can do all the work yourself) plus its a nice reliable engine.

Nothing is "wrong" with it, it's a good choice. But for someone who is chasing big power, even a regular 'busa lump would be a better choice.

S2000 engine is ideal for kit cars, no turbo rush to unsettle things either

Not that expensive vs power and it's reliable. Compare it to a 230hp Zetec or 20XE.

Quite a heavy engine though, circa 158kg with gearbox. Not sure how that compares to other 2.0 examples

Remember that blown 1.6 Zetec-SE Kadett I've posted a couple of times? 230bhp and about 95Kg+box. :D

I would imagine that basing it on the 1.7 and a couple of choice mods would bring 250bhp close...

A good choice but the only thing that lets it down is something that you are more qualified than most to confirm. VTec's are difficult to get big n/a power from.

Graham Bahr on Turbosport races an E30 with DIY-turbo'd M3 lump that's kicking nearly 500bhp...Nyom nyom nyom.

If it's putting out that much power then I'm guessing it's running a huge turbo. If so, I'd imagine it revs pretty high for the whole event and it must be pretty bad to live with in a road going capacity if it's road legal at all.

The S2000 lump has been big with the Escort rally boys for a few years now; as you'll know, they love throwing cold hard cash at development so I wouldn't be surprised if the next few years yield some interesting things...I've heard rumours of 280bhp+ n/a...But not seen any evidence.

Nom Nom Nom

Quite a good read...If only for all the development work and insight.
