Quick Review on the HD3870!

Just as I susbected, they are vista and very high, try that with your 8800GTS and tell if it still beats those :)

He is using Vista DX10 on very high settings.

Intriguing, only 2 fps slower than the GT, better image quality and DX10.1 support. Then factor in that ATI makes better drivers (imho), and I know which one I'd buy.

if it turns out only slightly slower in the majority of games, couldn't care less about 3dmark, i might be up for some crossfire 3870 versus 8800gt sli.

prefer to run intel boards instead of nfarce - dropping a few frames isn't a problem for the stability of p35/x38.

the pricing is going to be interesting.

Yeah its odd that, i'll await proper reviews to, the 3870 is 2900 performance as we've already been told, so that review is either rubbish, or those GT Vista drivers are, or the 2900 is only 2 slower than the GT in Vista with Crysis, as under XP its hammered.

Going by the below review which comes from a very well respected far east website, it looks like a 2900XT in performance to me and i am sure the mainstream reviews will confirm this.

A single 3870 will perform the same as a 2900XT, guaranteed.;)

No offence but I saw many long term and well respected members make similar comments regarding 8800GT / 8800 GTS. it's nice to speculate granted but soooooo many folks have been left with more than a little egg on their faces before now. also graphs mean squat, look at the lightsmark benchie and you'll see 2900 Pro and XT's running barely above my 7800 GT. anyone who judged them merely on statistics generated would not beleive the gap between the two in real terms.

maybe 4-6 fps faster but nothing special..

4-6PFPS in Crysis on 1920x1200 on 4xAA wouldnt be a bad boost at all...... it all depends on what you are starting from ;)

Especialy as seeing the GT gives that type of boost over the GTS, that isnt bad at all, and everone is out proclaiming the GT as the next best thing since the ATI 9800......

even gibbo said its just slightly faster then a 2900xt

Yeah so its very odd, it sounds like just what we had with the x1950's to me, they were only 1-2 frames faster than the x1900's they replaced, so you can say they were on par performnce wise, x1950's also had GDDR4, where as the x1900's were GDDR3, and i doubt he would say the 3870's on par performance wise with the 2900 if it was blowing it away, plus thats only one benchmark, and we've seen how in some games the 2900 is up there with the GTX, so this may not be rubbish afterall , could be one of those instances where the 2900 is up there with the GT (as GT's GTX peformance), and when we get all the proper reviews with all the other benchies of the other games, we'll probably see the ones its absolutely hammered in just like the 2900, so best to wait for those.

but going by the benchmarks above the AA performance is worser than the 2900,

it looks faster by 4-6fps only because its clocked at 775mhz which a 2900 can do easy

I think AMD/ATI are on the skids and this new refresh is an attempt to get some badly needed cash in to the coffers ASAP for as little deveolpment time as possible, the new name change for these cards is a clear giveaway.
