Which mobo's support crossfireX then? X38 chipset? Or are they a particular set of mobos?

I ask as I'm needing cpu/mobo/gpu to complete upgrade and might be worth getting one 3870 now and then another in a couple of months.

Edit - just done a quick google. CrossfireX appears to be 4? That would work out at over £600 for four of them... 'Slightly' more than an 8800 Ultra indeed :p

Ah, just read you said 3. I guess that makes more sense. Read they reached over 20,000 3dmark06 with two 3870's in crossfire, so possibly a good buy.

cheers

I would have thought 256mb would be fine for the 50's. As they will Have great performance in older games ( games out in last year or so ) at higher Resolutions. But because games such as Crysis are so demanding you cant even run them at high resolution very good on top cards so whats the point in giving them extra memory to a Mid Range card when they won't be able to play games at that resolution?

The pricing in my eyes is fantastic, 3850 Pro gives 2900 Pro beating performance and can clock too 2900 XT 512 performance.

OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 256MB - £146.86
HIS ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB - £123.36

hardly good price/performance on the 'Pro

I was expecting these at ~£100 even with us getting shafted on the exchange rates, but ~£120 is about a 33% mark up on the RRP ($) + VAT.

Question.

Can i run 2 3870 xt on a Asus Maximus Extreme Intel X38,reason i ask is these cards have double slot cooler`s.

Yeah i agree, i was expecting way lower to, Asus 3870 = £170, yer can get a GT for that, now if as Gibbo says these are same performance as the 2900's, then you'ld be a fool to buy em over the GT's, as the GT's destroy the 2900's as they are GTX performance.

Fair enough the others are a tenner cheaper, but you have to remember the GT's are to high in price being scare on the availability, and its been said that when they start flowing through in good quantities in the next week or 2, the prices should fall, they only as high as £170 etc... as they are a premium being scarce, so not looking good to me once the GT's start flowing as the prmeium price they are now is gona fall, and that will put em around the cheaper 3870 prices.

No faster than 2900?

Whats the point in them then?

The HIS 3870 is £148. The Asus one is £170 but at least it comes with an extra game (and a product placement sticker to boot).

I'm wondering if retailers are using the drought of 8800GTs to not only raise their prices on THOSE, but also on the 38xx cards.

If people want a new card that badly, then they might swap pre-orders of GTs for orders of in-stock 38xx's..... So you can hike the price of the 38xx's because people will still buy them as they have no alternative.

:(

Maybe ATI have some secret tweak in the core to give it some blistering speed.
Or in reality, its slower than a 8800GT and its price doesn't match it perfectly.
