nVidia to miss out on holiday sales

Hi there

In 3D Mark 2006 the HD3870 when overclock seems to yield much better results. We have a system here with a GTX in it which scores 13,300 in 3D Mark 2006. Needless to say a single overclocked HD 3870 is beating it. :)

However thats 3D Mark, which does not represent game performance. What is good though is the ATI card is quieter. :)

Thanks for the heads up. Are you going to be testing any games with the 3870 system, so that we can have an idea how well it performs against the 8800GT?

True that, the 2900XT does score very high in 3DMark06 but fails to keep that performance in real world games, kinda hope the 3850/3870 isn't the same.

Still, I hope ATi beat Nvidia with their 3850/3870 range, and if it's in the way of production numbers then so be it. Mainly so ATi/AMD can get a little bit of face back after the 2900XT failed

Aye, tis a shame ATI/ AMD can't muster a challenge to nVidia...afterall its the consumers who benefit when there is competition.

If this ATI range does out play or even match nVidia's then I'll be cancelling my pre-order and ordering a 3870. I can see an awful lot of peopl doing the same too, ATI may have a good chance in this respect.

Hi there

Using HD3870 stock cooler and no mods it seems happy around 860MHz and 2700MHz clock speeds. Very quick indeed.

This system has the Crysis Single Player DEMO installed, how do I bench using that? What settings are generally used by people?

Only problem with the system involved is its XP based.

True, if the card delivers im in as well.
I just wish more reviews were up as i'm very interested in how the reduction from 512bit bus will have affected the results.

I would try running it in "High" settings and try "Very High" also to see how it copes. XP won't allow you to run "Very High" but there is a hack were you modify some files to allow the high textures to run and you can run it with DX10 features. Here is the modification:

For Framerate: Open console "~" and type "r_displayinfo 1" (without quotes).

1680x1050 all High, no AA and 4x AA

In the game directory there is a batch file for running the GPU benchmark. It'll loop 3 times and give you a report at the end of the average FPS each loop (first is always lower due to caching).

2.7Ghz clock on the memory  Blimey

I remember when I got my 6800GT Golden Sample and you could OC the memory to 1.1Ghz which I thought was crazy speeds

Looking at your rig I can't believe that you're that surprised ;).

LOL, NVIDIA shot themselves in the foot releasing the GT early it seems.

Production numbers were not ready should have sat tight and waited

Oh dear.

Do you mean it's quieter than the previous ATi cards, or quieter than a GTX?

To bench Crysis:
Put all settings on HIGH, then close the game.

Go to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis SP Demo\Bin32\

Run this file: Benchmark_GPU.bat

Wait until it's finished, then a DOS window appears with all the information.

Maybe they discovered that the HD3870 would be faster, so they launched early to catch as many people as possible before they found out about HD3870.

Pretty naff judging a product launch on pure Fud and here say.

Perhaps they have been reading to much Fudzilla :p

You did compare it against an overclocked GTX right?
