my poor cat

Cats are fighters he should recover well. Same thing happened to my cat when he was a kitten, a broken leg didn't stop him trying to do everything he normally did. He managed to remove his cast about 7 times during his recovery, hasn't affected him, he's 14 now and still jumps from ridiculous heights.

With all due respect even if the driver had stopped what would you expect him to do? I saw a cat ran over once and pulled over ( No im not a fan of cat's ) I rang the RSPCA, council and the police (local station) Nobody was bothered, infact the police officer said leave it where you found it!.

With your back door being over 100feet away the driver wouldnt of found your address unless you live in the outback and yours is the only house within a 80 mile radius! Maybe you will be more careful when you let it out in future.

(Not aimed at you) One thing I dont understand about most cat owners. They keep it indoors as a cute kitten and it gets kicked out when its older and most / all dont care what happens to them!

take cat to vet
check microchip
:O owner details
phone owner
your job done?

dont no how i can be more carful letting it out, it goes out at night when the road is the quietest, we keep it in during the day because we dont want it going near the road that gets really busy, its got huge fields at the back of the house to roam in but we cant control were it goes.

Poor cat.

But there is no law against not stopping, if you hit a cat you don't need to stop. If you hit a dog though on the other hand, you have to report it.

Sad I know, but still.

Why should somebody do that? If the owner was taking care of there pet? The chance's are the person driving didnt even no he hit it, if it was dark. Although I love all animals Im not sure for a CAT I would go outta my way when half the owners dont care.

edit : What if it was at 8pm ? most vets are not open, most that have emergency call out would then charge the driver for the treatment and the chance's of the owner paying him back are?

OP, sorry to hear about that, hope it gets well soon. :(

Have you ever owned a cat? If they're not a house cat then they WANT to be let out, they NEED to be let out. The blindingly obvious reason you don't let a cat out roaming free as a kitten is because they can't look after themselves... would you let your child roam free outside with no supervision? Obviously not. However when they're an adult you have to give them their independence and let them look after themselves to some extent. Cats are pretty much the only domestic pet you can do this with.

Sorry to hear about your cat. Hope it gets better. As said, cats are pretty good at getting over these things and being on the mend.

Had to make the call to have my cat put down from cancer the other day. Quite sad :(

If you dont let a kitten out because it cant look after itself and a CAT get's run over, well dont seem to be looking after itself to me !

Like I said, sorry about the cat but I got the impression the owner was kinda blaming the driver, which I dont belive in. Sorry if this has touched a nerve.

Anyways....back to the TOPIC!

Hope your cat is ok mate, terrible thing to happen, but at the same time if he got himself back home, ate and is now with the vets, he's in the best possible hands, clever little fella getting himself back :)

Hope he's ok

my cats lucky to be alive, when she was about 5 she was hit by a car and we found her having crawled to our doorstep with her eye hanging out of it's socket. luckily she pulled through that one but lost the eye in the process, she's now 18 and last year we came home one day to find her again having crawled to the doorstep and passed out mangled pretty horribly. no one thought she'd pull through that one she couldn't even go to the toilet for days after the vet had finished with a poor prognosis, didn't eat or anything for 4-5 days, stayed in a box (loves the enclosed space) for weeks but gradually managed to pull through and seems healthier than ever apart from a slight limp.

However i've taken to keeping my eye on her when she goes out and to be honest I couldn't really blame the driver if she was hit again. she seems to have a deathwish, she'll lie in the middle of the road even when a car is driving down it to the point where they have to stop or on those rare nights where she goes outside she'll go to bloody sleep under the tyre of one of our neighbours car. we really can't seem to stop her and it's only down to the kindness and consideration of our neighbours that she hasn't been hit again. there's no way i could justify being angry with a neighbour if they didn't notice her one time with the way she acts.

The likely reason that the driver didn't stop was probably because they didn't notice it, or thought it was some other wild animal. You did say it was at night. Hitting something as small as a cat in such a way as to just injure it may not even register to be honest.

As to the stopping for dogs, I didn't think you had to do that any more since they are no longer licenced? I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first or last time.

I can't believe how unthoughtfull many people on here are. When did this country become so uncompassionate? Some guy has had his beloved friend injured and is obviously worried & upset and all you can do is have a dig at him. Grow up.

its not the endangering your life to avoid it thing, but if u know u have hit it you should take it to a vet and not just leave it to try and get home or die.

I didn't mean it like that, I meant often the cats are nowhere to be seen once they've been hit, they simply disappear, be it knocked out of sight by the car, or run off. They are strange creatures.

I don't like cats all that much, and to be honest I wouldn't take one to a vet if I hit it and I'd stopped. But that's just me.
I would and will always try to avoid them if I see them in the road, slow down etc.

Something similar happened to one of ours - he got hit by a car and was missing for hours. The missus was going frantic and went out in pouring rain looking for him only to come back and find in the meantime he'd dragged himself home and was laying in the conservatory on the back of the house.

She picked him up to dry him off and it was when we put him back down again we noticed that his back legs were useless. The upshot was within the hour we were on the way to the vets for an out-of-hours consultation (costly) and it turned out the following day, he'd got a smashed pelvis.

The vet explained to us that plaster wasn't necessary for the type of injury he had - the sheer amount of muscle around that part of a cat's body would act as a natural splint and hold all the bones together while they healed. We had to keep him in a cage for the next fortnight, which broke our hearts while all the others were running around - the main concern was whether the nerves to his back end had been damaged or severed, as it was several days before he was able to have a crap. We just thought "Poor little bugger ... incontinent on top of everything else".

It turns out we were worrying about nothing and within a week he was wanting to come out of the cage and have a walk around which absolutely amazed us - the vet said this was fine but to keep an eye on him and make sure the others didn't get too boisterous with him.

All that was five years or so ago - now you'd never know it happened, he's as active as he ever was, although we've been warned he may have a problem with arthritis/stiffness in his back legs as he gets older. Amazingly resilient creatures cats.

Poor cat, I hope he gets well soon.

Similar thing may of happened to my old cat, we found her with a smidgen of blood on her fur and it was filthy but unfortunately she had died just past the house on a neighbours drive.

My theory was that she had been hit by a car, tried to drag herself home but unfortunately gave up and died.

Really hate when anything bad happens to cat's as I love em. :(
