Hi Guys, I have a bit of an issue with a new build, all brand new parts. Core2Duo E6550, Gigabye n650 sli ds4 and 4gb corsair xms2 800.

I built the system up, switched on, and got a long beep. So I checked the manual which said it was memory. I removed 2 sticks, still a long beep, so I removed three sticks, leaving 1gb left in the system and it booted fine!? Are the other sticks fried?

My other issue is I cant use my keyboard to access the bios, I could on my other pc (its wireless) but this doesnt seem to send any power, should I get a wired keyboard for the setup

Thanks for your help

on my experience, during the first time you power-on your pc (just after building it), you have to use a wired keyboard. then you access the bios and change the settings from there to allow you to use your wireless keyboard.

for the ram problem, i dont have the proper knowledge to answer this. someone will just wait ;p

The other sticks probably aren't fried. If the last one you removed was faulty, then the two you removed before may have been fine but the faulty one was still in, so you're system wouldn't start. I would try adding a single stick back in, boot & repeat to identify which one has a problem. It may be they're all fine, some motherboards can be funny about RAM.

Depending on what RAM you have, you may need to increase the RAM voltage. A lot of RAM will boot 1 stick at 1.8V, but it needs 2.0-2.2V to run with more than one stick.

Its 1GB CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12 and I have 4 x 1GB Sticks, any ideas what I should up it to
THanks

400mhz in CPU-Z is 800mhz in reality.

Ah I see, thanks for that!
Im having issues with this new build, it locks up with more than 1gb of ram! Ive upped the DDR voltage by +0.300v which now lets me boot with 2/3/4gb but when I get to windows it just locks up. Ive noticed that the sticks are very hot when I remove them again, any ideas why this would be.

Also ive noticed in CPUz my processor isnt running at what it should be. Its an E6550 @ 2.33ghz but it states its running at 2ghz, multiplier is 6 (even though it says 7 in the bios) and bus speed is 333

HELP guys!

Ok ive now noticed the cpu drops to 6x when its not in use. What setting is this in the BIOS to disable?

Still having the ram issue, anyone have similar problems or help me out here?

Thanks guys

I'd RMA the RAM to be honest, assuming you haven't touched anything else it should now be stable. I'd switch to Ballistix as well if you can, or get some of the £70 OCZ stuff as that's only 2 sticks.

Not all RAM is compatible with all motherboards, and it does sound like your Corsair isn't quite right in your Gigabyte. I used Ballistix in mine, so I know that works.

To disable speedstep - look under advanced chipset and disable C1E, TM1&TM2, Speedstep. All that stuff.

Hey man, I was about to do then then I thought what happens if I change the slot when 2gb is installed. So I now have 1gb in slot one and 1gb in slot 2, and hey presto it works, ive tried all the other sticks and they all work in that combo. So the issue is.. I cant use 4gb :S

You have hit the common memory hole with 4 x 1GB sticks with the NVidia 650i chipset. It happens on other boards such as the ASUS P5n-e SLI. With 4 x 1GB sticks, the boards won't boot with memory speed between approx 723 - 838. With PC6400 RAM with BIOS auto settings, it will default to 800 and the board won't boot. For a start, try booting with the 2 sticks, set the memory speed down to 667, and then power up again. Unless you have another problem, the machine should boot.

Ah I see, thanks man, well I got 2 x 1gb to boot on default, so should I change it to 667 then install the other 2 sticks? and is 667 the highest I can go?

You can run below 723 or above 838, but not in between (roughly)
I've certainly tried mine at 900 and it's fine, but I settled for 711 which is within spec, as the speed difference wasn't worth worrying about
