Very Challenging Spec

Tsk tsk Huddy, you should know that barebones systems always have a motherboard pre-installed (no matter how bad it actually is :)).

No OS is a bad omission though!

£300 is a poor budget for a gaming PC tbh, may aswell get a console unless you're wanting it for RTS games, or you need a PC anyway.

£400-500 will get you something decent.

That's a good spec. Maybe change case & psu for this (should bring total to about £300 incl. VAT) ;)

just missing the XP/Vista. And you might need an AC7 or the like for OCing.

TBh, for the extra £30, its totaly worth it. That PSU/Case you link to wouldnt really last an upgrade to a better GFX, whereas the Zen/VX has enough punch for a better GFX, and is more easily upgradable to a better case/PSU combo without replacing both at the same time.

To be fair he's done well to spec up a system for £200 from OcUK. Kudos :)

You may find your best best is to scour the secondhand market. It wouldn't surprise me if people have old AMD kit they wanna get rid of.... something along the lines of an AMD64/X2, mobo, 1/2gig PC3200, gf7/X1x00.

TBH, even with this current environment of low prices on hardware, £200 for a *NEW* PC is stretching it.

Best to save up a little more , and you'll get a lot more for your money. £300 is possible for a comp, £200 is really pushing it to get anything worth running things on.

How about a Foxconn VIA K8M890M cheap x2 +1 gig ram thats 85pounds.hdrive 40.case +supply45 the rest he can work out.

Prob is, that doesnt include the GFX, which TBH you need to spend £60+ on for your money to really be worth anything...... in fact up till about £150 the more you can spend on GFX the better.

IMO its worth banking the money and waiting untill you can invest in a rig properly. hell, even most consoles cost more than £200....... computer wise in that price bracket you are looking at something that is a cheap surfing/word/power point machine, with OK gaming if you dont want to play anything out in the last 2-3 years at reasonable res.

Of course, thats all assuming you already have a usable monitor/keyboard/mouse, and i dont think ANY of the specs have included an XP/Vista OEM (chalk up another £70-100).

To think about it another way, you are looking at £30-45 a game for most modern games..... you think it's posible to make a decent gaming machine for the price of 6-7 games?

You know - whats really sad is that all these cheap specs will probably run better than my current PC. But I'm a bit of an RTS person.

This looks like great value and a good upgrade to my (sons) P4 2.4GHz GeForce 4Ti 4200 64MB combo. My only question is: why do so many people spec the Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60 when you can have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000+ 2.10GHz based system for the same price? The AMD consistently out scores the Intel according to a certain hardware sites CPU comparison page.

a C2D E2140 at 1.6GHz will easily overclock to about 2.2 (ish) on stock cooling and volts, whereupon it will trounce a A64 X2 4000+

:)
