Hi,

Can anyone recommend me a nice place to stay in a Lake District? Never been there before and now I want to go there for couple of days with my girlfriend.

Thanks!

Daniel

Good places to stay will depend entirely on what you're going there for. What are you fancying doing? Walking, watersports, sightseeing, naughty weekend etc?

Stay in Ambleside - lost of B&Bs with a wide range of prices.

Ambleside is a good central location - plenty to see and do.

Whilst what you say is true, it is extremely commercialised. If the OP is after that then spot on, however if he's after a quiet retreat then there's no point stopping there.

yeah - I'm after quiet retreat with some nice walks and/or cycling possibilities if possible...

We go there quite often for the weekend, some of the best food I have ever had, some great individually styled rooms. Spa and beauty for the ladies.

They bend over backwards for you too. I have told this story before on here but this is an example of how accomodating they are......

Once when we stayed we didn't realise that the Bistro was closed for the evening and we didn't have any formal wear with us for the restaurant.

They said that it wasn't a problem and we could dine where we like but we said that we wouldn't be comfortable in our scruffs and could we just have room service.

As a gesture they asked us if they could fetch a table from the restaurant to our suite and we could dine of the fine dining menu in our room! They even chucked in some freebies. The best thing was we didn't even complain!

Oh and the waiter was the restaturant manager!

be even nicer if you can find one with a nice open fire for this time of year

Lakeside does have open fires in the Oakroom and some of the other lounges etc. Not sure about the bedrooms, we have never had one in the suites.

Room 56 is awesome if it is available.

If you can stump up for a suite, Rooms 52, 53, 54, 55 and 56 off the top of my head they are awesome !!

Windermere is a nice small town. Good places to walk around as well and it has the biggest lake in the District too.

I can recommend the Swan Inn Hotel at Newby Bridge - top notch - even has it's own health club and is not too far from Windermere or Ambleside really.... Was there less than a month ago,

Also as at the Lakeside although a seperate entity, there is a steam train which takes you around Lake Windermere and also a freshwater aquarium.

Ahhh.. take the Steam Train from Lakeside and have a Meat and Potato Pie at the cafe the other end..... MMMMmmmmm...... :)

Have a look at some B&B's in Torver near Coniston Water. Me n the Mrs always go there. This time of year you should be able to pick up somewhere for £30 a night. Lovely walks, around there and its not commercialised in any way, shape or form.

Its only about 20mins drive away from Windermere as well if that takes your fancy.:D

If you go there you've got to go the Hole in the Wall pub in Bowness. Great pub, or used to be when I lived in Bowness for a while. On Sundays a few people would bring a guitar or two and have a sing along:D Used to be a good time. Charles Dickens used to drink there too, making it a very old pub.

I used to be a waiter at the Postilion restaurant years ago, but I prefer the Villa Positana (sic) Italian just down the round opposite Vinegar Joe's, very nice Snails;)

The boat trips are good too, take one to the other side of the lake and walk back (or cycle).

We stayed here for a few nights recently. It was really nice. Food was pub food but very good quality. breakfast was excellent. its in a tiny little village and perfect for walks and cycling etc. very very friendly staff. not far from kendal and windermere. Cant wait to go back. We had a more expensive room and it was very nice (pic on the right of main page) the plumbing is a bit dodgy, crap shower, but other than that is was perfect.

we booked through laterooms.com which was about 75 per night

I went up there on my motorbike back in september, slept in a tent so no idea about accommodation. I rode straight through windemere as I've been there before, nothing that fantastic. I headed up to Penrith then back down to Ravenstonedale, which has some nice waterfalls and pretty high passes :)
