I highly recommend washing that off ASAP because it drys to a hard almost tar like finish that afterwards cannot be shifted easily at all, even with spirits.

btw KTC oil is actually Soya oil, not rape seed. This means it has a higher gelling point than usual, -11°C iirc. So when it gets cold you might want to switch to rape seed or better still sunflower oil which gels at -17°C .

Quick google returns this, not saying its true though:p

"My BMW 330D specificaly excludes use of even bio-diesel, let alone chip fat. Apparently you must have correct lubricants to maintain the seals on the pumps etc."

edit- sorry yeah 5%

Nick - don't do it.

Come on man - you're the only person that currently reassures me that my turbo isn't going to blow and thus the world wont end. If you're doing something this stupid then I can no longer believe you. :(

I've got bored with telling him it's a daft idea (and quoting various bits and peices to back this up) and I'm now clinging to the hope that it's all a big mickey-take :(

Heh.

I put 20l of the above Veg oil into the tank along with 40l of diesel and a squirt of Millers diesel additive - so a 1:2 ratio. This gives a saving of £8 on a 60l tank working out at 86.6ppl.

Done about 150 miles on it now and the car drives exactly the same, just as smooth as before although it does feel slightly down on power. It is more smokey when the car is cold idling, but less smokey on full throttle - I guess this is down to there being no sulphur in veg oil.

Car starts up as normal despite the cold mornings we've had this week. This was my biggest worry. I rarely use my car on short journeys, and every journey this week has been around 40mins each way, so the engine is running at the normal operating temperature for most of the time.

I was more intrigued to whether this would work more than anything else - potentially it could save me £25-30 a month. Potentially it could cost me a new set of injectors and a fuel pump. However - there just seems to be no hard evidence out there which suggests that noticeable damage will be done. There is a lot of speculation of the damage it can cause, but there are also rumours of people running 530d's for tens of thousands of miles on pure veg oil.

As it stands my injectors have long outlived their 'expected' life, so if they did fail in the near future, I wouldn't be sure if the veg oil had actually caused it.

The main problem I've had so far with it is that getting the stuff in is a pain! In the end it worked out to be a 2 man job, and required a watering can :p

I think I'll try and cover a few thousand miles using the stuff and see if it hold out. I'm tempted to get some laptop software and an OBC connector to monitor the state of the injectors during this time.

It hardly seems worth all the hassle for saving about £7.50 a week max, i'd rather pull up beside a diesel pump and fill up instead of mucking about with a dirty great drum of veg oil, which could potentially cause problems.
If it were running on 100% and saving a small fortune, it may be worth it.
