ATI 3870XT vs 8800GT Official review @ Legionhardware

hehe, i told you lot this a long time ago. 2900 is crap and now the 3 series is crap. if i were to make a prediction right now, id say that r700 will also be crap. ;)

You know i use to think this guy talked balls, well sometimes hes still does :p but on the 2900, give credit where credit is due.

Looked about right tbh, I dont smell any rat's, maybe you got rats in your loft?

Funny aswell how people thought they'll get this over the GT coz it is cooler and uses less power, it hardly uses any less power and is just as hot, I mean, really, its not something to buy :o

If you could download graphics cards I would proberbly download the 3870 and buy the 8800GT.

Could you stop been such a troll! There is no doubt the GT is the faster card, but i don't see how anandtech can give the GTX 101fps in UT3, and the 2900XT 95fp@1600*1200, and these guys come out with 111fps Vs 78!!

u dummy :p, it uses less power than the 2900, and the 2900 uses so much power to begin with that the power reduction was to be expected. its not got much difference in power to the 8800gt which is on 65nm compared to the 3870 which is 55nm.

what were you expecting? a 50w less power draw than the 8800gt? :p:D

credit is good, i like. :D 3 series is just a die shrink of 2900 with more core clok speed and less memory bandwidth. just like the 8800gt is compared to the gts/gtx cards.
die shrink gains the 38 series card the advantages of lower heat and power consumption. but the disadvantage is that its still based on r600 tech so its still crap.

No I was not, but I can bet some people were!.

Hi there

Like I said guys, wait for game benchmarks, though I'd wait for proper reviews from the likes of Anandtech before believing what one says.

I also said since day one expect circa 2900 XT 1GB DDR4 performance with less power consumption, quieter and cheaper.

For me in 3D Mark its performed superbly and the Crysis results looked OK to me initially but as I said I had nothing to compare against.

Anyway whatever customers wish to buy, plenty of HD 3850's and HD 3870's in stock and more 8800 GT's arriving tomorrow and lots of BFG with any luck next week.

Well according to a more recent review of the GT v 2900xt, the GT is the faster card!

And we don't know how the games were tested, ie, what map, how many players and so on.

i see you removed your 8800gt which was for sale on the bay. wise move ;)

I bet somewhere someone will blame drivers.
Still, does not look good for ATI being unable to produce anything that can compete with the GT / GTX

I do wonder what 4 of them in X-FireX is like.

every bench that's been leaked from the last week has said the same thing, the GT is much faster in general although of course the 2900XT/3870 does hold up in some titles.

reviews from the more popular sites aren't going to paint a rosier picture, unless they're fudged :D

How do you know it's the same map they benchmarked? They don't mention it in the review.

Both maps offer similar performance Raikiri so it actually doesnt matter!

Also can I add that the 7.10's dont seem to work with the HD3870's anyways! I tried installing them and it basically says no lol! Im on the CD drivers and thats a first for me lol!

Let's leave the final verdict for when the drivers come out, eh ?
I mean you can slate a brand new card from the off, but if the driver aren't mature, then your result means, basically, naff all, al la 2900XT, ATi have done very well with the drivers for it, imho.
So let's just all take a breather, I know it may be hard for nVidia fanboys to, and wait out for a couple of driver releases.

Well a single 3870 may not be up to much but i am looking forward to see how they perform in XFIREX with two, three or even four card combos.

i said all along it's same as a 2900xt in performance .. and some people said no it can't be, it must be faster because it supports dx10.1... now u have prove it's the same..

Sorry but the only people who would think that are complete and utter noobs (not meant offensively), the people here who know their stuff would never say or entertain such a thing. It was obvious from the start it would be very, very similar to the 2900XT. The main goal for AMD here was to increase yields, give it a fresh face, and make more profit from their cards. Hence why DX10.1 was pimped, and performance in anything other than crossfire not shouted about.

Let's leave the final verdict for when the drivers come out, eh ?

This one has nothing to do with drivers, and everything to do with hardware and architecture. I don't believe in any form of fanboyism, in fact I hate it, but sometimes you just have to face the cold, hard facts... and assess the evidence placed in front of you.

It isn't a terrible card, it was just NEVER intended to be anything other than a cheaper, cooler, higher profit-margin direct replacement for the 2900XT with added 10.1 functionality. The benchmarls should come as no surprise to anyone who has read the specs of the card and knows what 2900 architecture consists of.
