** The Official ATI 3870/3850 512/256mb Review/Overclocking Thread **

From the feedback and reviews it seems the 8800GT is better than the 3870XT - yet the specification on the XT's are better. Is this down to poor ATI drivers?

Its just like the 2900XT aint it, specification of it made the GTX look whimpy yet the GTX was a a lot faster. Its the way they utilize the card I think and it's apparently an inefficient design.

Just looked at Toms Hardware, a mixed bag of reviews, some a lot better than others.

What I want to see is a review that factors in overclocking on both the 3870 and the 8800 GT, these are supposed to be best bang for buck cards so why is no one factoring overclockability and performance ?

To quote - (hex)

"The GeForce 8800 GT is no better than the Radeon HD 3870 on paper but who cares about paper?

Bottom line: AMD Radeon HD 3870 is a fast, fast mid-range card that checks all the feature tick boxes with aplomb. Trouble is, NVIDIA's GeForce 8800 GT 512 manages to out-muscle it in the benchmarks, largely because it has a developer-relations team that’s properly funded and is allowed to compete at the highest level. HIS cards come with NO GAMES.

My two are currently sat at 855/1350 :)

Hi there

They come with Call of Juarez, but its OcUK who give the game, not HIS and hence why you did not get any as you got yours yesterday. :p

If you want some games, next time you pop in just say and I shall give you a collection. :)

The 3870 seems limited with the 256bit interface, a lot of the time the 2900XT beats it due to having a 512bit interface, ATI should have given it a 512bit then it would be a lot closer to 8800GT but at the moment its 5-25% slower for most things.

I think considering the price and availability these are a decent competitor to the GT.

Not sure this is true when overclocking....see here...

You want to see something real impressive look at our memory overclock, up to 1271 MHz (2.54 GHz!) That’s fast, and gives us a boost in memory bandwidth up to 81 GB/sec, which is close to the bandwidth of a GeForce 8800 GTX.

GT also has a 256bit interface.

not in my oppinion, you can still get 8800gt's, not too easy and as for price you can get 8800gt's for the 3870 price already so that really isnt a factor tbh. dx10.1 makes virtually no difference and very few games will support it. the 3850 is pretty good tho, its a little bit more than the 8600GTS but miles faster.

No-where currently has stock, and the availbility on these cards is shocking. I think the XT's are keen contender especially as they are almost £40 cheaper. People don't want to wait around for a card, they will go for a cheaper alternative.

the 3870xt is £158 on ocuk and the 8800gt is £170 on ocuk, so it isnt £40 cheaper, only £12. Some places do have stock, you just need to know where to look and to check daily. yes the availability is poor atm, but once there is plenty of stock there wouldnt really be any reason to go for a 3870xt over an 8800gt.
