Virgin speeds are carp.

Virgin on many level's is dependant on area. Where I am I cant sing it high enough, but reading elsewhere try going ADSL and see if you still have the same complaints..... If it is better hats off! If not dont complain too much.

The speed test in question (Speedtest.net) is a poor indicator of speed as are most. This test (apart from being cute and giving a nice summary for everyone to go 'yay' or 'boo' at) only tests your connection to one location. The problem is that's only representative of one connection to one server in one location, if you think it's accurate then try another location. For example if I connect to the London test location I get one speed, switch over to Dublin I get another vastly different result (usually better to be fair), the same is true with the other locations. It's about right for the gadget show to come up with a well considered and balanced idea like this, measuring the connection speed to one server is bound to be a reliable indication of how fast a connection is to everything :p

If you want a better indication of how your connection performs to multiple servers in a number of different locations then try http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net yes you have to download and install it but it's better (though if you are having major connection problems that may be a problem in itself!

I myself am having a mare with VM at the moment. I plan to complain pretty soon and so should you guys. If enough people complain perhaps we can get them to do something about it.

See http://gadgetshow.five.tv/jsp/speed_test.htm for information on how to register your speeds.

That test is useless. It tells me my speed is just over 4 meg so I logged into giganews straight after and got just under 19 meg. I am very happy with my Virgin media connection.

same giganews constant speeds. no matter what speed tests you use they always depends on how hammerd they are

Hi People.

My friend is getting Virgin Media (cable) I was wondering if I could link a wireless router upto the cable modem?

Stelly

I too am having a mare with VM. Ill be on 3mbs one minute then 0.1mbs then next. Don't know whats going on tbh. Im fairly close to the exchange so Its not that. May switch soon.

Try plugging into your router with a cable instead of wireless, to make sure its not that.

I am actually on the DSL version, not cable, neglected to mention that.. nad I have no diea how far I actually am from the exchange..

I've al;so tried wiring myself in, no such luck..

Virgin's well known method of traffic shaping is probably the worst in the market, its an over subscribed, under-invested network so the only answer they seem to be able to come up with is 'traffic shaping'.

Terrible, terrible place to be at the minute for your internet, nearly all my family is with them and every one of them is seeing the same problems.

High pings, slow speeds and crap support make for a truly horrid internet experience.

I worked for NTL/Virgin for a year, its not oversubscribed nor under funded as its their primary product (bringing in the most product revenue), the network actually still has a massive amount of redundancy more so than any adsl provider. if you have high pings or a bad connection then you have a hardware problem either on your line to the ring main box (small green thing on the street) or on your own hardware.

NTL do not use traffic shaping, and thank god otherwise we would not be able to utilise certain services such as P2P, they use bandwidth limiting which is totally different.

the rule is between 4pm and midnight if you download over 350mb (based on a 4mb line) then your download speed will be halved, your upload speed is untouched. even on a £17.99 a month 4mb line that still gives you a good 230kbps constant speed, this is still above average compared to UK adsl services.

after 12pm the bandwidth is yours to use as you like at full speed with NO monthly limits, a rarity these days for ISP`s.

so please, if your having a problem, get an engineer out, don’t slate the entire service.

Thats the problem though, surley I shouldnt be getting just 9kbps and struggling to run REALLY basic Internet games.. and by basic im talking Isometric graphics lol its not intensive on the internet connection either because theres hardly ne one on.

The only other thing I use the connection for is EVE.. but that again surley wont show me down.

i understand and i do sympathise but if there is a problem with NTL/Virgin then its a local one and not endicative of a bad service over all, whats your modem model and are you using a router? if so, what type, if not, what type of connection are you using to hook up to your pc, ethernet or usb?

We have 2 routers, a Netgear one supplied to us by Virgin and my old WR54 Linksys one.. the Netgear one plugs into the Linksys one Via Ethernet (Linksys one is far better for signal quality) and we use them by Wireless as we all have laptops, we dont actually have desktop computers in the house.

am i understanding this correctly? you have a router going into a router?

pull the netgear.

We cant plug a phone line into the Linksys one tho. I did a test this morning really early, I was getting proper speeds (250k+) so it must be just an evening thing..

No :( we're in a area that doesnt have cable we can only get DSL here.

Well then im afraid thats your problem... the ADSL service is highly dependant on factors such as distance from the exchange, weather conditions, quality of the line and such and as this is a secondary product that is more than likely ran by another company but simply supported packaged branded and sold under virgin i would advise looking at beonline as ADSL is their primary product. but i would also pull one of those routers, a router through a router on ADSL is asking for trouble IMO.

Virgin's traffic MANAGEMENT is not at all the worst in the business.

Euhm one thing guys, you all know about virgins Fair share policy right? It might explain slow download speeds at certain times.
