EU 'should expand beyond Europe'

Bit shortsighted of him I say, we should be strengthening the countrys already in the EU not letting poorer states in to bleed us dry. I'm not sure on Russia joining the EU but including some African states could be suicidal.

In theory? Good idea. In the EU's current bureaucratic, inefficient and protectionist form? No thanks.

Get your own house in order before trying to help the rest of the world.

Not good tbh.
Prefer EU to stay in europe, or actually, to stop expanding for 10 years or so at all till all internal problems are fixed and the eastern european economy's can pay instead of just receive subsidy's.

Does anyone think it's possible to impose unification on a large and varied part of the world without military conquest and occupation?

The last time anything like this was done, it was called the British empire.

My history is a bit shaky for this time period but I was always under the impression that Britain had a fair few tussles with the locals on the way to Empire building, perhaps I was labouring under a misapprehension. :)

And my answer to the question is no, not really. It can work up to a point, see sovereignty given away by EU member states but after that point I think some form of rebellion is almost inevitable.

I wasn't clear - I intended the British empire as an example of imposed unification by military force. Even when it wasn't used, it was available for use. Unification doesn't work unless it happens naturally over time, it's based on a mutual charismatic leader or it is imposed by force and maintained by force.

Pffft, bradford is more of a foreign country than a city... if they come or not its never going to be more british, but its crap that they all come here... its ruinin our country.

Hi! My mum's an immigrant. She had a great time ruining the country by learning the language near perfectly, being gainfully employed and paying taxes.

In short, don't generalise.
