Hi All,

First off, impulse buying sucks! ;)

Secondly, due to the above I have purchased the new 30" Dell, link ,to replace my 24" (2405FPW 24") monitor. I mostly play games such as eve, wow, BF2, call of duty etc.. Have I just performed game-viewing suicide?

Any response (good or bad) is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Agent

Yes it does!

Have I just performed game-viewing suicide?

I think we both know the answer to that, send it back from whence it came foolish boy!

But then again, carpe diem! :D

Hope you've got a minimum of SLI'ed 8800 Ultras then...

Err.. no I don't. I'm smelling another upgrade. I've got a single X1950xtx atm (I think thats what she is. Haven't touched the PC in a while and my memory fades fast)

So your advice being.. keep it and go kerazy?

No one is immune from acts of idiocy so I'll tell you what I normally do when I succumb to the rampant disease which currently afflicts your soul. If i purchase something which I blatantly shouldn't have I send it back for a refund, once I have my cash safely in my account I wait a week, and usually my desire to own it goes.

If however the same irrational desire to own said piece of kit is still within me then I'll go out and buy it again, this time for keeps and with no regrets, since we are obviously meant to be together for eternity, or until its time for another upgrade. ;)

That any clearer?:)

hhmmm... that sounds like sense, reason and a degree of "growd-up-ness" and tbh I don't like what I hear. :P

But in all seriousness, the swap out is to have a bigger viewing area and sharper imague quality as I have the cash available but just wanting to know if it is a "good quality" monitor, i.e. bluring, ghosting etc etc. If I need to upgrade my machine to match then fair call.

However - there is the 3008 coming out "soon" but with everything to do with PC's, its out of date by the time you've ordered it anyways. Also, the 3008 has a few more features and there is no mention of quality increase, which indicates a good few months before its release.

I think they've (greatly) improved the amount of connections; I've never seen so many! In fact due to the amount of connections there's no reason that they have to wait for DisplayPort enabled graphics cards to be on the market before they release this monitor.

They also claim the scaling down to lower resolutions is better (think gaming).

Hay Imy,

Thanks for that dude - I've been reading up on this one. The mental amounts of connectors is cool but I only need a few as I will only be putting my sex-box and PC through it. I believe it has the connectors for that at least. But the displayport.. this could be an interesting one, can someone shed some light on this?

Scaling wise, I'll just have to have a powerful beast to run it....

DisplayPort is a new connector type for monitors. Its set to replace DVI and VGA although expect most DisplayPort monitors to support at least DVI as well. Its a licence/royalty free standard (unlike HDMI) which has helped to give it good industry backing. Both nVidia and ATI have committed to releasing graphics cards in the near future with DisplayPort connectors.

Samsung were actually the first to announce a DisplayPort monitor.

Some key features of DisplayPort:
  • 10.2 Gbit/s forward link channel supports high resolution monitors, 2560×1600, with single cable
  • Supports color depth of 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 bits per component
  • Full bandwidth transmission for 3 meter cable
  • Reduced bandwidth transmission, 1080p, for 15 meter cable
  • DisplayPort connector assists in blind connection by just feeling

Don't bother upgrading, buy one of the OCUK 32" HDTVs (1280x720 or 1360x768) for the same money as one GTX, use it as a second monitor and play games/films on that, sorted :D

The 30" monitors are fantastic for desktop work but pretty much pointless for games as it just takes too much power to run them at native res, so you end up dropping the resolution. Seen quite a few people with them at LANs and not one of them has been running games at native res, whereas most with a 24" (2407s are everywhere at LANs these days) are running 1920x1200 without any probs at all.

The extra high resolution comes into its own for desktop use.

While gaming you could always drop to 1920x1200 or lower.

People (nutters) take 30" monitors to LANs?

Exactly. Given that you're going to have to drop the res to run games well, you have to need the extra res for desktop work to justify the expense really.

They do indeed :)

Absolutely love my 3007WFP-HC for general use and gaming. The only slight downside is the lack of connectors. But for gaming I just step down a little on the resolution as I only have a 7800 GTX 512 EE. Ok, it's not as good as a native resolution but it's fine for me and the size of the picture more than makes up for it.

Love it and wouldn't change to something smaller :)
