Official October NPD figures

Interesting to see the sales for this month with the PS3 price drop included, one thing to note that about 75% of total 360 sales are in the US. The PS3 saw a 25% ish increase in sales, the Wii a 30% increase and the 360 a decrease of 14%, prob down to the amazing numbers for September though. According to a few places the PS3 is now a couple of 100K above the 360 in this stage in its life, although PAL regions has only been on sale since end of March. The Non Us figures for the consoles for last week are:
Japan Others Total
PS3 63K 73.6K 136.6K
360 6.9K 54.1K 61K
Wii 32.8K 84.4K 117.2K

Ps3 numbers was high in Japan as the price cut happened on the last day of figures and the new white 40GB PS3 was out, prob be a bit higher than normal next week and then back to the 19-25K a week its been doing for last couple of months.

thanks for posting those figures.. nice to see someone who isnt biased.

So basically in Europe/UK and Japan the ps3 is outseling the x360. I'm assuming the "others" you're referring to is Europe? What about Asia?
And this is even before the ps3 price drop wow!

Impressive US figures from MS, but they really need to improve in Japan (if they possibly can, brand loyalty is very strong over there) if they want to be considered the top console worldwide. Not quite sure how they can manage it, but if it's possible, I'm sure they'll figure it out.

I try to be unbiased although i only have a PS3, the others relate to everything that isnt US, Canada and Japan. Funny thing is with the 360 the english speaking countrys ie US,England, Australia the 360 normally sells a lot better than the PS3, in the non english countrys the PS3 normally outsells the 360! Not sure why though lol. In Spain the PS3 has already out sold the 360 and the Wii in only 6 months or so, not sure why there crazy on the PS3 lol

PS3 seems to be struggling still. I feel bad for Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Epic - their games really aren't going to reach much of an audience. In fact, I have to wonder why the hell Epic decided to release UT3 on PS3 first when it's got such a low installed base, compared to the 360's platform where they have already proven themselves with Gears of War. It would have been a sellout.

I would say with some degree of confidence that third party developers trying their major IPs on the Playstation 3 are making an uncomfortable, risky at best business decision in doing so. It's really just not making the cut. Ratchet and Clank bombing at 75k is proof enough.

I believe the 40gb PS3 was released on November 2nd, so obviously the OP's figures don't take that into account as they are for October.

As msmalls said, the PS3 has outsold the Wii this week in Japan for the first time ever, Here's the complete list of hardware sales in Japan for the week ending November 11:
  • DS - 78,884
  • PSP - 58,964
  • PS3 - 55,924
  • Wii - 34,546
  • PS2 - 9,043
  • Xbox 360- 5,817
  • GB Micro - 708
  • GBASP - 211
  • GC - 69
  • GBA - 4
Edit: Forgot to mention PS3 sales have almost trippled in the good old US of A since the price reduction.

bet it's reverted back by the end of the month though.

Most people I know with 360's are starting to get PS3's.. (About time, my friends list has < 10 people on it!)..

The thing is, they are only just getting it out of 'interest'.. basically playing demos'/BR and buying little actual software..

It's starting to gather some momentum, but I fear that as is borne out in the figures, people are just not splashing the cash on games as much as *** others, and software numbers is more important then console sales..

We all know 2008 should see Sony at least draw level with MS, but then again I am struggling to see how..

R&C is seen as more of a kids title though to be honest, the PS3's main demographic is still twentysomething males, so more 'grown up' titles such as Drake's Fortune will give a better indication as to the kind of numbers that can be shifted.
In fact PES2008 is a good title to refer to as well, if you can find unit figures for that then it'll be a good indicator of the potential sales for a game that hits the target demographic.

Ah, here you go, details of the release week sales of PES 2008...
http://spong.com/article/14149

"The PS2 is still in the lead, but with a much smaller share [than last year] of 42% and the 360 not too far behind with 30% of the sales."

Which leaves 28% for the PC and PS3 versions.
According to charttrack the PS3 version was 3rd in the charts on release week, behind the PS2 and 360 versions, but the PC version didn't even make it in to the top 40. So it's fair to assume that the vast majority of that 28% is PS3 sales, which means it's not that far behind the 360 in potential sales when it comes to 'big titles'.

it seems quite odd that it must have had a huge % uptake of ps3 owners whereas the 360 buyers must have been much slower in their buying rates.

Looking at the US games sales charts as there one of the few to give actual numbers Ratchet and clank has sold 182K in 3 weeks not great but PGR4 has only sold 110K in 6 weeks, so maybe its the big games that sell very well on both systems? Take COD4 for example the 360 version sold 507K and on the PS3 it sold 179K (2.7x less) , big difference but when the 360 has nearly 3.5X the amount of consoles in the US its not surprising.

This week.

The PS3 is not outselling the 360. The PS3 outsold the 360, this week.

Slight difference. I'd give it at least a couple more weeks before going around claiming its outselling the 360 overall.

wow touchy ehh

Where do i "go around" claiming that the ps3 is outselling the 360 overall?

Heres what happened.

msmalls74 reports the figures from japan/restofworld for this month which show the ps3 ahead of the 360

i reply back saying the ps3 is then outselling the 360.

Which for that month IT IS.

Why should i have to mention that it was only for that month when msmalls has already said it. And i'm commenting on what he said so wheres the problem? Seems clear to me that thats what i was commenting on and not making outlandish claims that the ps3 is outselling the 360 overall.

Should i edit my post to say its for that month only so as not to upset any 360 owners? :)

Then again according to this article ps3 is now consistently outselling the xbox360 in Europe mainly due to the new pricing as the 40gig model is now within reach of a lot of people.

And thats without the "apparent" AAA titles. :)
