I'm just setting up a new system which I had hoped would include a BFG 8800 GT, but with the current supply problem I am thinking of going for a 2900 XT.

With the MBO I have bought, Gigabyte GA P35-DS3P I could add another XT card in a few months when they come dowm in price.

So, my question is -

Do I wait for the 880O GT or get a 2900 XT and get a second in a few months?

Would a single 8800 GT be better than 2x 2900XT cards?

2900 in crossfire should outperform the single 8800gt if it is supported in game however you could look into the 38XX range of cards as well. and in a few months CF might not be so attractive (depending on what is released or discontinued). another option is to wait for the new 8800GTS, if you can. but if you are going to buy very soon i say secure yourself a 8800GT even if it means placing a preorder. tehn spend the money saved on booze or future upgrades

Doesnt sound like he has the card yet.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the 2900 series now that the 38XX series is out (considering the massive difference in power requirements and relatively small difference in performance).

I would check out some reviews of the 3870 vs 8800GT before making any decisions.

Are we saying that 2 3870's are better than 1 8800GT and/or 2900XT?

If i were to go for just 1 3870 at the moment would that be worse than -

1. 8800 GT
2. 2900 XT

???
 
3870 is a 2900 XT, its just been relaunched under a new name, and on a smaller process, so get 2x 3870's, as they are cheaper than the 2900 XT's, but are same performance, or if you want 1x card then wait for the GT, as they are due in anyday now, could be tomorrow as they were due today. :)

no.

3870 isn't worse than 2900xt it's the same performance, but 3870 is slightly faster in some games due to slightly higher clock ..

the 8800gt is the fastist
