Am I right to think that for gaming on a 24" skipping the GT vs 3870 dilemma and going straight to the GTX is the better option? A mate has offered me his GTX for £250.
 
My personal view is that neither will play it the way I want it so I just got the GT and will be getting some kind of 9000 when they are out next year. If you are going to keep it for a long time then the GTX is the better card.

Reality of it is that it's going to be a lot harder to pick up a GT so for an "I want to play games looking oh so sweet now", it would have to be the GTX as it holds high IQ at high resolutions better than either the 8800GT or HD3870 cards.

You do know that there are new cards coming though?. Already the GT is affecting the pricing of the GTX and Ultra so what do you think that £250 you paid is going to be worth when you have a £220 (speculation) brand new card with full warranty that is faster, cooler and less power hungry at your given resolution?.

If it were me in your situation then I'd skip the GTX. The GT is better than the HD3870 but will be a lot harder to source one out quickly and I doubt it will be enough for the experience you want at the resolution you've specified when AA/AF is applied. So on that I would probably go crossfire HD3870's or just hold out a little while longer for the new 128SP GTS that might just be the final nail in the GTX's (applauds the card for a year on top though (as should you all when it is finally beaten)) coffin.
 
The new GTS should be faster than the GTX in 90% of apps because of it's much better shader setup (the shaders are actaully running much faster than the GTX), so in shader intensive games: Crysis, UT3, pretty much any next-gen game, then you'll reap the benefits.

Thats why offering advice about getting a GTX is the wrong thing to do.

This is bad advice.

The new GTS is coming very soon killing the GTX off.

Maybe do some research before you post.

The OP nearly wasted 250 big ones on dying tech.
 
The new GTS may be clocked faster, but it still uses the same 256 bit interface as the GT, so it will suffer the same bandwith limitations.

The GTX has twice the bandwith, so at 1920x1200 it will pull away from the GTS when AA is used.

i sold my GTX 10 days ago for 260 because it was starting to struggle @ 1920x1200 and i'll probably grab 2 GT's when they come back into stock for about £300 once the prices stabilizes to their true mark, which will be a pretty big jump over the GTX on most titles.

it wouldn't be a bad move for you but imo 250 is a little high, in a few weeks you'll be able to pick them up for less than 200 2nd hand.
