Was going to get a 8600GT for the new system, but I am having second thoughts on this card.

Should I go ahead with the 8600gt or should I get something else, budget around the £100 mark.

Cheers

x1950 pro, whoops the 8600 GT and is only £83 for the 512mb version, doesn't have Dx10 but thats no biggie anyway as the 8600 GT is useless for Dx10 being 128bit. :)

id say wait and see how the 3850 performs, its around 25 quid over your budget but it shoudl be faster than the x1950pro by a fair bit. and since the power consumption and heat issues are sorted in the 38 series its just the performance i can complain about now.

but wait for the reviews, shoudl be up tomorrow.

I have a 512 meg 8600gt in one of my shuttles, pretty much too slow for anything other than viewing HD stuff [very quiet btw], older games or if you just want all the Vista Aero gubbins.

depends on your budget ultimately and intended use thereof

Yeah the 3850 would really be worth the extra cash. It's up there with the 8800GTS's, maybe not quite as quick as the GT but still spending that extra £11 would get you so much more performance

Thats very cheap. How do these perform compared to the 3870 and GT, considerign their drivesr are probably still not very optimized.

:EDIT:

as fast as a GTS you say. For 111 quid not bad.

Id say no. Cross fire and sli are never as good as a single faster card. Currently id only crossfire or even crossfirex (3 or 4 cards) the 3870 or sli the 8800GT or possibly new GTS.

well ive nto looked into the actual performance of the 3850 to much. But i think it be best to get a 3870 then another later of you wanted to go down that route. In games you can get anywhere between 0% and 90% extra performance from the second card in games. The average appears to be 45% from benchmarks ive seen recently but some well optimized games like company of heros will give you about 80%. But if you dont get that 80% you may struggle with the 3850s

I like the idea of two cards in seperate machines and when only one machine is needed you can double up the gfx power :)

Usefull if you work in a cybercafe or something similar
