i have a dell 2407 & 8800gts , will i be able to play hd dvd or blue-ray movies at there best 1080 & if so which hd format would you recommend , or is it just a matter of price

any advice welcome , thanks

Yup it works fine, 1080p but only does 60hz rather than 24 which can cause judder. no PC LCDs support this, only about 3 very expensive Tvs do.

As for the formate, newsgroups and 2x 500GB hard drives seem to be the best option. :p

I'm not gonna buy and discs until there is a dual format pllayer or one wins.

Sony don't have a good record when it comes to inventing formats but to be fair Blu Ray is the technically better format. More space for games. :D

What do we need blue ray for? Why is blue any better then hd? I cant see films needing moer space then a HD disk infact do they even use up all the space of a DVD disk?

Its just a gimik which im not sure is totaly nessary. Blue ray quality could probably be done on Hd disks or even Dvd disks but isn't so that they can sell blue ray.

a couple of films are too big to fit on a hd-dvd disc. they can and do make use of the space, either a higher bitrate on the video or the the audio - 7.1 lossless PCM takes up a lot of space. think, 70-odd minutes of 2 channel pcm takes up about 620mb. a 2 & 1/2 hour film, ~1.24gb. 7 channels instead of two, ~4gb, plus the 0.1 channel. thats at the standard 44.1khz/24bit sampling rate as well., double it if you want to move up to 96khz/24bit. and then there's the DD TrueHD audio track, DTS: MA if its in there, standard DD/DTS, throw in a couple of commentary tracks..... it takes up a lot of space.

most of the time though, films released on both formats tend to be exactly the same, but anyway...blueray, and hd-dvd quality, wont be done on a dvd any time soon lol

All depends how a film is encoded, blu-ray has more space, which means the film can be encoded at a higher bit rate, therefore giving you better quality.

An uncompressed feature film in HD 1080p, weighs in at around 1TB so obviously needs to be compressed, blu-ray having more space means they can keep the bit rate higher.

I don't quite get what you are trying to say here.

How is more space a gimik, that is the point of upgrading from DVD. So suerly it is better to go with the bigger one?

as far as the HD war goes....not really. since both have their exclusives, there is no winner. a lot of older films are being re-released in HD on hd-dvd and some of those are really fantastic....go hd-dvd if thats your thing. bluray is home to a lot of the new films, and its exclusives are mostly newer as well.

if you cant choose get both. then you dont have to worry:cool:

I thought that PANASONIC TH42PX70 PLASMA has 24FPS support? Apparently when tested, it can deal with 24FPS, however, it no audio came out of the speakers. There seems to be a grey area with this plasma screen.

The link below indicates that the above plasma can handle 24FPS.

The screen is available for £700, so not too expensive.

You can connect your pc to your Dell monitor using a DVI cable and get 1080p. Is the Dell monitor HDCP compliant? If not, dont worry. Just use AnyDVD-HD.

Also, on such a small screen dont expect to be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. To test, you can download some trailers/clips from microsofts website. Download the 720p and 1080p version and see if you can see any difference. 24" is just too small.
