****ATi 3850 & 3870 Ramblings****

Anyone know which 3rd party coolers fit on a 70' ??
I too would like to know this! One thing I was wondering is whether a x1950xtx cooler would fit on it? I have a spare one in a box somewhere. Otherwise, an Accelero cooler would be a nice cheap cooling upgrade.

The 3870 looks good to me and would give a 50% increase in performance. I have had the same kind of graphics card for almost 2 years now (x1900xt that died, RMA replacement was my current card) and it is starting to show its age a little.

Proof, well 3dmark anyway

There would probably be a big difference at 1680x1050, not as much with 1280x1024.

I am on 256MB 1950pro cos only running at 1280x1024 (17" TFT), when i get a 22" i will have to go to 512MB for the higher resolution

well then its 20 quid more for the xt, how much better would the xt b over the pro?

So will 2 HD3870 XTs be better than my 8800GTX?

I have allways prefered Ati over nVidia and if thus is the case ill definetly be switching.......

will these cards work/fit in a shuttle SN25P ?

Should work fine. I have an sn25p myself. I'm currently using an ati x800xt in it and plan to upgrade to this card also. While I myself have never used a duel slot cooling solution in this shutle, I have seen on other specialist shuttle forums that many people do just that. A few people had the HD2900xt in the sn25p and other P/P2 cases. also seen people with 8800gts/gtx in the P/P2 series. The only considerations I can think of are high capacitors on the mobo and I'm pretty sure there are none, but dont have my sn25p infront of me at the moment. you will probably have to remove your fan duct. but thats no big loss and doesnt really aid cooling that much tbh as i have had that off and on myself.

Hope thats of some help.

yes, if only somewhere was selling them for £135, that would make them a real bargin............ oh wait, they are :p

only thing i'm wanting is a decent price on a phenom.

now the question is, can i slip in a 3870 with a 2900xt for crossfire. it can match gpu clocks fine, but memory, it couldn't, hmmmm. we shall see, probably will work, but guessing it won't be optimal.

That looks a good buy, its for 512mb memory and surely these can overclock to XT speeds or even further? would make this an awsome card for the price :D.

I doubt crossfire with a 3870 and 2900XT will work, they are using compleatly different cores and memory, surely thats enough to make them not work or is it different with crossfire now?

crossfire has always been more versitile than sli but i suspect your right. really cant see that working. ati have said however that an older card could be paired up for physics. think that card had to be of the x1xxx generation atleast though. from a fraim or tileing point of view though it would seem really messy working with dd3/ddr4 plus the difference in cores and memory bus. i would think the difference in memory latencys would be hard enough to work around but they must have pulled that off in the x800 era with the missmatching you could apparantly do then. a real shame they ****** around with that external dongle for so long tbh.

How have you not been suspended yet? I respect your comments normally, but you seem to be on a mission to **** off ocuk prices this past 2 weeks(ish).

IMHO, it's tarnishing what I saw as your good reputation.

I would say so. What clock are you running at on the card?

You may need to adjust the fan settings to get an acceptable temperature.

u can crossfire a ddr2 and ddr3 cards together. i did that before with a x1600xt ddr3 + x1650pro ddr2, both cards run at they only core/memory speeds..

the 2900 and 3870 may work together but the dx10.1 maybe will be the problem

hey - I've just used Rivatuner to check my hd3870 temps.

It went up to 90c . Is that too high a temperature?

The issue here is the fan speed. ATI have set the GPU bios to not make the fan work hard right up to insane temps.
If you set the fan to max in Rivatuner you will see that even under full load it sits at about 40c (does for me anyway). So its just the fan not scaling enough... or ATI are quite happy that the core runs at those temps.
