So I bought a HD2900...

I bought a Sapphire HD 2900 Pro 1GB GDDR4 (core 600mHz, memory 1600mHz) last week for £200 from OCUK.

Then! the 3870s come out at £50 less with greater speeds!

Should I flog my card second hand (hasn't even been powered up yet) and buy a 3870, or stick with the 2900?

I use my pc for solid modelling/FEA and gaming.

Cheers!

That's really unfortunate :(

Personally I would keep it, just overclock it to XT speeds and you should be golden. The only game you aren't going to be able to play really well is Crysis.

Well how long have you had it for in total? If it hasnt been open or used etc you can return it via the distance selling act! The 3870 is basically a 2900xt with a much better cooler as it is completely silent plus it uses less power and it also seems to perform better in DX10! I would try and return it first because you wont get anywhere near £200 trying to sell it now im afraid!

Can I actually return it for a full refund? I still have all the packaging and stuff that came with it and, as I said, mint condition, never even been powered up. I thought the Act only applied to damaged or faulty goods?

Should I get in touch with OCUK via webnote and ask them?

Thanks a million for the advice chaps!

As above, return it via the distance selling act seen as you aint used it yet.

Yeah webnote OcUK explaining it all, that its still boxed up, never been used etc... see what they say. :)

You wont get a refund if it has passed the seven days selling distance act rules, put it on the bay and take the loss, get a GT, its da best.;)

@ jrodga2k5

Kindly remove my mum from your sig.:p

Wilco!

Cheers guys. Though this now places me right back where I started...I need a graphics card that'll run solid models in heavy modes.

Time to go look at some of the 3870 vs 8800 threads!

Well its only Tuesday, so thers a good chance hes still within the 7 days, if he ordered after last Monday/Tuesday. :p

Id agree with the above though, GT all the way, 3870 is only GTS performance, GT is GTX.

Argh, I ordered it on the 9th, it came on the 13th (I live in Northern Ireland)...I'm just outside the week.

Time for a nice grovelling webnote asking for mercy!

Should I be forced to keep it ('forced' is maybe a bit strong, I'm sure it's a crackin card) can I simply overclock on the Sapphire cooler as suggested above? I've heard speeds of 750mHz are easily obtainable without compromising lifespan too much.

yes.. it can clock to 820-860 depending how good your case cooling is.

Fantastic, I have two big rubber mounted fans I've lifted from a server at work for case cooling.

As regards overclocking a HD2900, does the card require both 6- and 8-pin power connectors? From what I've seen, very few power supplies advertise a graphics card 8-pin connector (lots have the 8-pin motherboard connector, but it's not a good idea to put that into your gfx card, oh no not at all. Why do I need a new pc you ask? Well, funny coincidence...!)

use 2 6pin.. connect one 6pin in the 6pin socket and connect one 6pin in the 8pin socket

So those extra 2 pins don't draw more power? What do they do? Can it be bypassed with a jumper?

Apologies if I'm asking off-topic questions (but hey, I started this!), I'll have a hunt around for more info on this.
