I was looking at starting to invest. Not in any particular company at the moment.

I was just wondering if there are any long term investors here, As I have no idea what i'm doing. I understand the base line obviously. Buy Low, Sell High. Or at the other end of the scale, Sell before you lose money.

I was just wondering how people go about knowing where to invest, and I also wondered if anyone had any tips or websites they find useful.

Thank ya :)

Check out fool.co.uk and their championship shares product. You can get a free 30 day trial and they give you all the recomendations.

Also have a look at Google finance, great for managing your portfolio.

What market?

OP: If you have access to a Bloomberg terminal, it is fantastic for live feeds and news.

I use it at work, and have a Bloomberg anywhere account, so use it at home too. I am in a similar situation where I would like to create my own portfolio with UK stocks which pay out Income.

One thing I would suggest is look at investing into a Fund to start off. Have a good look at JPMorgan.com/assetmanagement who have a load of funds on offer.

Dont put anything on you cant afford to lose. I had to sale mine as I needed the money. However I hope to be investing again. the approach will go with is buy start up companies and hold onto the shares for a decade or so. Some might go bankrupt but hopfully some of them will become the next big thing. If you can by at 5p per share you can make some nice profit in a long term investment.

I have been considering this, with a potential buyout in sight. But their liquidity issue would not be resolved overnight, and I believe there is still a great risk of losing it all.

Yes, my comment was tounge-in-cheek but with a serious tinge, if that makes sense :p.

I can't see the name Northern Rock recovering easily. The assets should be assimilated and renamed imo rather than kept as an entity / trading division.

What market? I have no idea - The court has been handling my shares :D Im 18 in 2 months and i get all de monieees

But most potential buyouts so far have vastly undervalued the rock. I don't see any buyout been favorable to shareholders. I think I even read somewhere that one bid valued each share at around 10p :o One hell of a fall from 12 quid that they were at in February.

For christ's sake please don't put it in Northern Rock. It's going to be sold for a broken ipod or peppercorns eventually.
