A Ford Mondeo With Rust? Surely not!

While giving my 53 Plate MK3 Mondeo a clean I saw what I thought to be just a little chip in the paintwork at the boot lid. So I give it a little poke, and a whole 4 inch strip of weld seam sealant and paint comes off in my hand exposing a nice bit of rusty Ford steel. (I did find some Kurust in the garage so applied some as a short term "fix")

Excuse the shoddy excuse for a photo, forgot how my old P&S camera works!

Luckily the paint on the outer surface of the boot looks OK, so do you think this is an easy enough job for a DIY fix seeing as it won't be seen from the outside?

Might take the car up to a body shop to see what they suggest. I doubt Ford would consider treating this under their corrosion warranty seeing as the previous owner didnt' bother getting the annual paint checks done.

Only wish I had seen this before buying the car! Mind you there wasn't much to see until the paint fell off! :(

Car wasn't bought from a Ford dealer. None of the annual paint checks were done in the log book either. Last owner of the car had it serviced at a ford garage july last year, I then bought it used from a Toyota garage 3 months ago or so.

Suppose I've nothing to lose by letting my local Ford dealer take a look and see what they suggest. Shouldn't expect a 4 year old car to rust like this! Unless the last owner got something caught between the tailgate and the car bodywork while closing the boot, thus causing a bit of damage to the paint letting water in?

It is rather annoing as it's the newest nicest car I've ever had.

it could have been repair work?

Doesnt look like, the weld looks too clean for a repair job, and normally reskinning something isnt economically viable for a Eurobox.

My ST24 used to have really bad rust on the arches:( My ST3 has got a rust spot where a stonechip has gone through the bonnet.

It gets worse! Before going to the ford stealers to see what they would say I gave all the usual ford rust places a check over. Found the bottom inside edge of the nearside rear door pretty rusty with loose paint + seam sealant :(

Drove to the non Ford place I bought the car, they themselves couldn't help but they said they had a guy in every thursday who could fix it in under an hour for around £30. (fix it for £30? Perhaps a bodge it for £30)

Went to 2 Ford dealers, as luck would have it the bodyshop person in both branches were on a day off so unable to see if I could claim under corrosion warranty. One Ford branch will phone back on Monday to see if I am eligable to claim despite the annual car paint checks not being done. (I suspect "no" will be the answer)

On the way back home I popped into a car body shop, to let them have a look. The guy reckoned he could fix the bottom of the door and the rusty bit on the boot, prime, seal, spray then laquer for around £125. He'd need the car for two days though, remove rust and prime one day, spray to coat the second.

Depending on what Ford say I think I'll probably be best getting it done at the body shop. I don't really have the facilities or time to do a DIY job.

meh. :( Such a nice car to drive, shame about the rust.

An update.
Back to the Ford dealers today, spoke to the chap in the body shop dept.
He came out, had a look at all the doors, both rear doors needing repair. Took photos of the doors + tailgate, reg plate, mileage + VIN number and filled in a warranty claim form which he'll send to Ford.

Didn't ask if the annual paint checks had been done either! :D

I should hopefully hear in 2 weeks or so if Ford will authorise the warranty repair. If so the dealers reckon it will be january before they'll be able to do the work. Car is due service + MOT then anyway, so hopefully if they go ahead with the work they can do everything at the same time.
