I would like to read 'The Holy Quran', I've read many religious texts but not the Quran, as Muslims have become such a pinnacle part of our society I would like to try to understand their religion more, I've been reading through a translation of it here http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/ and have been finding it very interesting but I hate reading longs texts off a computer screen, could someone on here recommend me a decent English translation of the Quran please, I know when it comes to the Bible there are many different translations, some very far from the original text so I'm guessing this is true of the Quran also ?, so I want a decent translation, any help much appreciated.

I only know of two version: Yusuf Ali, and some other one written in an older form of English. You know Muslims consider all the translations to be well false, so you if you want to do it proper, better start learning Arabic.

I have read very little of it, found it rather boring. As for the Bible translations, there are a lot of them. Some seem different but are really just styled in a more simplistic way. Furthermore the original text is long gone, was written in Hebrew/Greek/other, and in a seemingly unreadable way (no lowercase letters, punctuation, spaces, etc).

Basically since according to them, 1 Arabic word can mean 20 different English words, its rather difficult to translate accurately.

Dear Lowrider,

This is one thread I would like to take my time to write. The Holy Quran came down to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) From God via Gabriel.

The reason for Islam is Devine Right to the people and the Holy Quran has the teachings and the Law of Islam.

Since the Quran came down to earth it has been in its original text in Pure Arabic. There have been many people translating the Quran in all languages, but the original arabic text is followed.

Do not be put off. The people who tranlated it in English for example are not your common people. Most of the people who have translated it are Doctors or people who specialise in Islam.

So try to grab a book and read it, most of the translations are the same, because they used the same copy to translate it in to.

You will find great stories, faithful laws and scientific informations in there. and you will learn so much. I hope you enjoy reading it. After you read it, if you have questions google it. If you want further details they this website www.al-shia.com Its a Shia website, so being a shia I usually get most of my information from there.

Islam is not about beating your wife with a stick or terrorism.

Todays era is not what Islam is all about.

Don't bother, it's a load of half arsed crap propaganda that doesn't make any sense! Much the same as the Christian fiction!

And your proof is?

hahaha it doesnt make sense becasue you dont want to widen your knowledge. You can only judge something if you have read the facts and then you decide.

You cant decide something like that by just sitting behind your PC wasting your time.

EDIT: I also think you comment is unappropraite !!!!:mad::(

If you're interested in widening your knowledge, may I suggest starting with a dictionary. :)

Its a good start :) :D

Edit: Try doing a 12 hour shift and trying to put a sentence together :p

From what I understand, the Quran was more of a spoken word 'book' and was not put to paper for quite a while after it's alleged passing to Muhammad. No two spoken versions ever being the same from one area to the next, sort of a chinese whispers effect. Can you be certain that what you read is definitely what was originally said by Gabriel (top bloke, handy with a sword) to your prophet?

You can say the same thing about Christianity but at least our writings match up with many of the scrolls that have been discovered recently.

Thanks for the info Abz, good informative post, I'm going to order a translation of the Quran by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, I'll let you guys know what I think, I love reading anything religious or based on religion and have put off reading the Quran way too long, should be intresting.

The Quran was written by Prophet Muhammad himself after getting all the verses from Gabriel. The verses have been the same ever since then.

When God chooses a prophet, that prophet is a special person in plain terms. And that is proven by the Mircales that they performed. What we read in the Quran is Jutice, hence I believe its true to every word.

The Quran has stories of all of the knowen prophets, eg Moses, Isaac, Jesus, Noah etc and what they did.

When Prophet Muhammad learnt a verse, he came from the cave and tought it to the people.

In term of the Bible, I suggest you do some more research as the Bible is not in its original text. This fact is written in Chritain Books and am not making this up.

EDIT: One of the Miracales is that Prophet Muhammad couldnt read or write, Gerbiral thought him when the first verse came down to Prophet Muhammad. You telling me someone who cant read and write would make up a 604 pages book?

The translation by Yusuf Ali is probably the most read translation and contains some very good chapter pre-faces and excellent footnotes.

The site that you have listed in your OP is, imo, the best on the Web when it comes to the three major translations and also with how good the search utility is.

Am glad, hope you enjoy it. I also like reading religous books. I think its a great way to learn about history and life it self and widen the knowledge of other peoples beliefs.

When you get it, keep it safe and remeber the text in it is sacred, so look after it :D

Why do people put so much faith religious texts!

There is no evidence at all to prove that "x said y" so to speak.

Based on a fairly tenuous assumption that somebody said "x" originally how are we to know that the later written texts are not akin to a session of chinese whispers.

They are fictional works at best that have been used and abused over thousands of years to to suit the needs of people as they wish.

Treating them as fact is naive to say the least.
