Cut 1 hour 20 minutes from a Leeds to Birmingham journey by cruising at 90 instead? What planet are you on?

Maybe he's gone to the moon in that rocket ship of his ;)

Leeds to Birmingham down the M1 - 120 miles or so...

At a 60mph average speed it would take... 2 hours. Or, 1 hour 20 minutes.

Clarkey, you would need to travel some 670,000,000mph faster than the posted speed limit to "shave off" 1 hour 20 minutes from the journey. Or in fact pretty much ANY journey in the UK. Thats almost certainly going to result in you getting a driving ban tbh.

If travelling over 100 miles in a car with an engine smaller than 1800cc and shorter than 4200mm, use the train

Hahah, I do 160 miles down fast dual carrigeway and motorway many times to and from uni in my 1.2 clio. It gets better - the heating controls are broken, so I'm stuck in there baking going (indicated 100mph) the whole way >_>

I know you're only joking, but the train takes more than twice as long, isn't cheaper, and I'd have trouble getting all my stuff up that way ;)

Ok so this week I will be shooting down the motorway for the first time. Quite a lengthy journey, Leeds to Birmingham and back the same day.

Anyone got any tips for me? What's the general rules? I presume I should always move into the second lane when approaching a slip lane to let the cars from the left gain access to the motorway easier etc?

I don't intend on going fast probably stick to cruising at 60 all the way to be honest, only a 1.2 Clio so it doesn't exactly have much punch behind it. :D

Cruising speed is perfectly fine :) in fact you're more likely to reach your destination faster with a slower cruising speed than staying sharp behind traffic and slowing down...speeding up...braking etc - you avoid the domino effect (the eyes above the roads are doing this for you anyway on busy motorways by enforcing 50-60mph zones to practice this even when there does not appear to be any congestion since it's a method aimed to get you to your destination faster and it works too).

My completely serious suggestion is to take a brick to use as a crude but effective cruise control system ;)

In reality your first long motorway journey is a complete non event, I'm sure you will have no issues at all.

Remember, only move over to let some idiot coming down the slip road in IF it's safe to do so. You could adjust your speed up or down accordingly too. There's nothing worse than having someone swerve into your lane (usually sans indicators) just as you're about to overtake because they're "letting someone in".

If someone cuts you up or leaps into that gap ahead that you've created... don't just sit up their arse to show them who's boss. Drop back a bit if you have to.

You also really want to know what's going on 360degrees around you at any one time. And as said, don't just look as far as the car in front's rear bumper. Look what happening as far as you can see ahead too.

Finally, don't **** off a lorry driver. Unless you like driving up embankments/into the central reservation :) - Especially if it's a Ramage Lorry.

I meant over both directions, 240 miles is 4 hours at 60, 2h40 at 90 so yeah, thats an hour and 20 mins saving.

Evidently, the one where people have return journeys also ;)

I'm saying nothing...... :D

Oh yes, when I go home I always go down the M1 at about 10-11pm. And then the A38/A50 are perfectly clear except the odd lorry too, I love it :D

I have a similar experience in the early hours, apart from the odd car... ;):D

Ooops, I seem to get thanked though? I work in transport (like you) so tend to be less of an arse towards truck drivers than the average driver.

Thats the trick mate, the average driver is (imo) an arse, hence me ignoring them! - I will thank any that do flash me in, however, I only come in when I deem it safe to do so.

Btw, you don't work in transport, you were cursed to it from a previous life..... :D

Edit double post so I used it! :o

No, thats an AVERAGE speed of 90mph door to door. You can't get that by sitting at 90mph indicated!

And if you do 70-75, the sensible speed, the difference is even less. Nobody does 60 on a Motorway. Except the truckers and old people.

To get an average of 90mph you have to sit well over 100 for most of the journey. I did from my house, to donnington, 160 miles, in 2hours, we left at 6am, no traffic, and were over 100 for most of the motorways, bar the m42.

How many people have you complained about who do 60 on the motorway all the time? seems like a lot of truckers and old people to me :p

There's more than just truckers and old people who do 60~ - you see them all the time, they aren't just old people and truckers.

Truckers legal maximum is 60 MPH.

Most speed limiters that are required by law in HGV's are calibrated to 56MPH.

Blame the old gits. ;)

If you see a black M5, run away.
Sorry I am actually a **** on the motorway admittedly, everyone seems to want to cut me up, so I have a nice habbit of getting really really close to the back of their car (inches away). By the way, don't do that.

The way I see is best is just look right in the distance and notice your presence, saying that it's probably all i've ever taken from my lessons years ago.

It's a real shame that in life those who least deserve them are those who end up with the most beautiful things.
