The Holy Quran.

EDIT: One of the Miracales is that Prophet Muhammad couldnt read or write, Gerbiral thought him when the first verse came down to Prophet Muhammad. You telling me someone who cant read and write would make up a 604 pages book?

What evidence is there that the above is true, please do not quote the Quran as the source, what independant verified evidence is there?

Numerous testimonies from people living at the time. As far as I remember, one of the main arguments used against the Prophet (PBUH) by his enemies is that he was illiterate. I also do believe that at the time, the Prophet (PBUH) used a seal for a signature as opposed to a written one that all the other people used. The best form of proof outside the Quranic text will be the Hadith (traditions of the Prophet (PBUH)). There are Hadith which confirm the issue of illiteracy apparently. I was not aware it was such a contentious issue (and I am a Muslim myself).

Anyway, some interesting discussion for/against here: -

If the OP wants a copy of the Quran to read, then he should go to any mosque or Islamic centre and ask. I am sure he will get a good translated version for free. No need to buy one.

Don't bother, it's a load of half arsed crap propaganda that doesn't make any sense! Much the same as the Christian fiction!

Why do people put so much faith religious texts!...Treating them as fact is naive to say the least.

The whole point of religious writings is that you look past what is written and instead see what is meant. The allegorical nature of the stories and the advice & wisdom of the writings are what count.

So Gods, prophets and the like are irrelevant then?

I got given a copy of the the Quaran, I only flicked through it, but there were lots of references to Jewish people in there, why?

Mainly because the Jewish people, and the Christians are both "People of the Book" because the Quran recognises the Bible and Torah as legitimate revelations from God.

I've seen several interviews with high-ranking Muslims who state that the Quran is the true word of God as it is the most recent of the teachings, making all others before it irrelevant. Why then, is the Old Testement included?

You place so much faith in an illiterate peadophile who's claims of divinity are suspect at least, who has been claimed to preach peace but choose to wage war. A bit like the idiots who choose to preach hatred today.

PS, yes Michael wielded the sword but in the battle against the fallen, Gabriel was quite handy too. :D

Thanks for your worthless and insulting (and unsubstantiated) comments. I would place much more faith in a religion that preaches tolerance and respect than one that makes you feel like you have some sort of entitlement to go and insult other religions.

Rather than take this thread off topic, if you cannot contribute to it constructivley then kindly S-T-F-U. Your claims of paedophilia have been disputed by reputable scholars, and you have no right to sit on any moral high horse when the UK and US have killed millions in Iraq. I think it is clear who is preaching peace and waging war, no?

If lowrider wants to read the Quran to get some more knowledge about Islam, I don't see why people should use this as a platform for their soapbox. Lay off it everyone. Personally, we need a lot more people delving a bit more into Islam to understand it before they start knocking it like ignorant five year olds.

Quoted for truth. I don't know why people are allowed to derail religious threads with posts that are disrespectful and don't contribute to the OP.

I haven't be disrespectful at all I don't think. I have however questioned the validity of the text he wishes to read.

You think I back this war in Iraq and Afghanistan? Think again.

This is the last thing I am going to say before not commenting on anything apart from the original thread topic. I did not accuse you of war support now did I? Not so nice to feel like I was generalising though, was it? Now you know (just a tiny bit more) how Muslims feel when you trash talk about their religion.

Okay back on topic: -

The Quran was written by Prophet Muhammad himself after getting all the verses from Gabriel. The verses have been the same ever since then.
That's funny. i've been told by a couple of muslims, one being my ex-wife, that the Prophet Muhammad himself couldn't read or write and got his followers to carve the words into stone on the side of a mountain reciting to them

so just to clarify, which is correct?

Hi

I found this a while back when I was reading up about Islam. I thought it was quite interesting and has a few translations of verses but only in the context of which point the writers are trying to explain so it won't have a full translation.

http://www.islam-guide.com/

p.s. I've just read through some of the replies and the zeal of some people is really quite disturbing. Seeking knowledge is a good thing no matter what the subject matter is, maybe if more people were like this we wouldn't have such an ignorant society.

Why are people coming in this thread to bash religious text?

If you are in the mindset that all religion is rubbish and can not be proved (the latter being quite a misunderstanding of religion), then how are you benefiting the thread by posting such views? The issue in the OP clearly isn't aimed at you so if you are going to troll and go out of your way to aggrevate, you are just going to look like a moron.
